H22A4 swap problem

i have a 4th gen lude (96 to be exact) and i love it, i just got some minor problems. it has a H22A4 engine in it and to my knowledge those came only in 5th gen ludes. i wanna know if the ecu has to be swapped as well and that could be what is throwing a CEL... that is my first question. number two is.. i just put in a new clutch, it was a downgrade from a stage 1 race clutch (its just an autozone duralast clutch cause im ballin on a budget ) but from time to time it wont go into gear when i start it up. i have to turn it off and work the gears through and press the clutch a few times. that was the whole reason i replaced the first clutch in the first place. does anyone know why it is doing this!?!?!? AHHH it makes me mad. thanks for all input, im new to this and imports in general..

thanks yall.

No, an H22a4 can work just fine with the ECU from a '96. '96 lude's are OBDII just like 5th gens, so the ECU is essentially the same. What code are you throwing?

Could be worn shift linkages or cables, worn syncros, bent shift fork...any of a number of things. Do you only have the problem going into 1st, or is it all the gears?

primarily 1st... but it also happened sometimes on 2nd and 3rd. and as far as the code i havent had it checkked yet. i have a feeling it might have someting to do with my headers i have DC ceramics. i just dont know. im gonna go get it checked tomorrow and i will post what code it was throwing... i appreciate the reply.. im trying to make this thing all good to go! :P

also i will check the shift linkages... the guy i bought it from a year or so ago has a bunch of jimmy rigged connections and what not... so i will check it out and let you know!

I'd change the transmission fluid if you haven't done so already...that's where I'd start.

As for the CEL, there is no need to go anywhere to get it checked. You can do it yourself in a few minutes with a paperclip. Another DIY ATTS, ABS, & CEL (Check Engine Light) DTC

Also, an aftermarket header will not cause a CEL.

If you don't have a pump (easy way) then you'll need one of the funnels from advance that has the long clear tube on it, the fill bolt is the big 17mm next to the passenger axle. The drain bolt is of course the one under it that uses a 3/8" drive ratchet to undo. What you wanna do is have the car on a level surface and feed the tube from the top so taht it meets the fill hole and it will take a lil over 2 qts, it will spill out when full.

What I'm wondering is if you possibly did something to the hydraulic system for the clutch when swapping in the new one cause it is kinda easy to do. If the piston on the slave extends too far it will ruin it and when the clutch isn't holding adequate pressure, even without a soft pedal, it will make it hard to go into gears. You should like already said check things like the shift cables, it would be pretty coincidental for a internal part to cause this.
