Ever since i've owned my 1993 H22A1 i've expierenced on par with around a 1qt/1000 miles oil consumption issue and it seems others do too
compression is ~200psi all acrossed the board too so the motor is "sound" i spose
Yet I never get a blue puff from the exhaust and the only time my exhaust smells "nasty" is at WOT VTEC then it throws some black puffs which I, as the driver, can't see, but I have people drive behind me to tell me what they see
what's the deal
I just write it off as nature of the beast and those black puffs, I call em vtec dust
I have a 96vtec and the only thing i notice with the oil is how dirty is gets. After 3,000 my oil comes out really dirty. So i had a "gumout" done on it. I'll see if that did anything in 3k.
man I must be the lucky one cause I have a JDM h22a that I never need to ad oil to. I always change it every 3,000-4,000 miles with castrol syntax 5w30 and never need to add any oil in between. I have a 4th gen prelude SI with a JDM h22a.
I guess it depends pretty much on my driving! If I keep Ragging the hell out of it and staying in VTEC for long periods of time, then I'd have to add a full quart in between oil changes (Every 2000 miles)
BTW I have a OBD II !!

My previous 95 VTEC did not burn any oil at all, even during the break-in period. Moreover, the car started using Mobil 1 10W-30 at as early as 600 miles.
Well, my current 01 SH, on the other hand, burns oil like a mofo. It has only 2600 miles for now and still has the original factory-filled oil in it. I'll see if it will settle after few more thousand miles.

That is not normal. 1 quart every 3k is normal.
The most I burn is 1/2 a quart every 3k. If I'm easy on the engine, it burns less.
As for the black puffs of smoke, you are running too rich. At that time, I thought that it was normal. But I just wanted to see if I can get rid of it, so I blocked off my EGR valve, advanced my timing and tightened my O2 sensor and no more "vtec dust".

I have the same problem with running rich.. thanks for the ideas.. i find theh igher octane gasi use the better it is... im running about a 110octane gas right now with timing slightly retarded... it runs awesome... and the a/f ratio seems to stay in the stoich area under hard acceleration...
