Mine did the same thing when i changed my head gasket. Everyone kept saying it was the tensioner but it wasnt. And I have the Auto tensioner on mine. Mine walked about a centimeter or so off the cam gears then stayed there. Been running like that since August and no issues so far.
I know a couple of people with the same problem but their cars seem to be running just fine as well.
Iono, i guess just keep tryin to figure it out o.O

It's a misalignment issue. Actually in most cases the tensioner is the culprit that introduces the misalignment into the drive but in this case it's most likely the camshaft alignment. When the gasket was changed the alignment of the camshaft in respect to the other components must have changed and it doesn't take much, just a few thousands of a inch will do it. Due to the belt geometry this drive is very sensitive for any component misalignment.

If the belt is running unsupported it drastically shortens the belts life expectancy because the fiberglass cord that carries the load is severely over stressed. In addition there probably is a side rubbing issue on the crankshaft sprocket when the belt is being pushed back by the sprocket flange that is detrimental to the belt.

One possible solution would be to redo the tightening of the head. Start tightening the head bolts that are furthest away from the cam sprocket with a slightly higher torque than the recommended spec and work your way toward the cam sprocket. This will hopefully result in the head gasket collapsing a little more in the back which will tilt up the camshaft in the direction that will cause the belt to track towards the engine.
