h22a VTEC engagement question

Me and some friends swapped an H22A w/OBDI ecu....

well, long story short, would a CEL caused by a missing o2 sensor keep VTEC from engaging? He drove open header to the shop thats doing the rest of his body work, and VTEC wouldnt engage. Do you think that this could be caused by the ECU not seeing an o2 sensor voltage?

Also, we elongated the wires in his 93 Si to plug in the VTEC soleniod and oil pressure plugs. Is there any other wiring involved?

P.S. the engine bay was pre-wired for vtec, just needed the wires to be longer, and its a JDM ECU

Also keep in mind that VTEC won't engage until the car is fully warmed up.

I have no O2 sensor installed, the only code I am currently throwing is for the O2 sensor, and my VTEC engages as expected.

well i know vtec doesnt engage with a broken knock sensor :P i dont knwo about a missing o2 sensor. Maybe i'm wrong tho ... i have a feeling my car thinks its still cold. The only place i've read about a 6500 redline is when its 'not moving'...
