H22A owners: What are you using for engine oil and what's your rate of consumption?

I'm taking a survey to see what others are getting from their motors. I just did an oil change today and made note of the consumption rate of my car. Of course I ALWAYS keep a close eye on things and meticulously maintain my car, chaning the oil at 3000-3500 mile intervals with 5qts of Mobil 1 10W-30. Oil level is just at the bottom "hole" of the dipstick, consuming approx 1.5 qts of oil between changes. It's a JDM H22A with about 65K on the motor.

I'm also curious where the consumption roots.. I'm guessing valve seals, and most of it occurs under hard driving/high RPM duty. I've also heard the rings are to blame, which I can believe.

What's your take on the subject?

i heard it had something to do with vtec burning oil. so the more u hit vtec your oil will go down faster. also i dont think im losing that much oil in mine. i fill it up a little higher than the middle of teh 2 holes on the dip stick and right now its right in the middle of the 2 holes after about 2800 miles. im just using castrol gtx 10w-30.

I work in the Parts Dept. at a Honda dealership. We have received a TSB on the Prelude regarding excessive oil consumption. The bulliten was intended for 5th gen cars, but 4th gens may have the same problem. There are certain criteria to go by, but depending on the rate of consumption, we are replacing engines under warranty. If your car is still under warranty, get with your local dealership and see what they can do for you

94 VTEC with 76,000 miles. I fill it to the second (highest) hole with Mobil 10W 30 synthetic blend. It normally takes from 5 - 5.2 quarts.

No oil consumption at all, but I rarely ever VTEC.

Mark

I'm at like 128k miles. I've been using regular Mobil 5w-30 and 10w-30. I'd say I burn about 0.5 quart every 3k.

I just switched over to Mobil 1 synthetic 5w-30 and I burn about 3/4 of a quart every 3k now. Still suprises me how little oil I burn with my mileage. And I do VTEC quite often. Actually, I beat the crap out of my car.

I'm confused

It seems as if everyone fills their oil to a different level. I always thought the manual said to refill using 5.1 - 5.2 quarts of oil. That always took me to the highest hole on the dipstick.

Why do some of you fill to the first hole or between the two? Do you know something I don't?

Mark

Why are you confused Mark? Did I misread something? I don't see anyone saying they fill to the middle or lower level of the dip stick. All I see is that they said they use up or "burn" 1-1.5 quarts and their oil level ends up in the middle or lower mark. I'm sure no one here is dumb enough to only put 1-1.5 quarts, if that's what you're thinking.

And yeah, the manual does specify 5.1 quarts. That should bring you right at the top hole. I don't see where you read that people fill their engine up to the middle or lower level.

I remeber reading a thread many months ago and some people were saying that they fill between the holes as well, I just wanted to know if I was missing something because 5.1 quarts takes you right to the second hole.

Ahh, I see. Sorry I missed that completely. I'm with you, I fill up 5.1 quarts and it take me right to the top, sometimes a tiny bit over.
