h22 swap idle surge/ boggin in mid range

Hey guys, just got done swapping a JDM h22 into my 94 si and am having issues now. I ran it for about a week with the P14 ecu driving conservatively, with no problems, however, I just got done swapping a p13 ecu into it and now its having major issues. Firstly when first started it has massive bogging, surging idles. I have to maintain 3k rpms or so to keep the car from stalling. After it warms up the idle is fine though. Next if I get the car above 4k rpm's the check engine light pops on and goes into limp mode. After checking the code it was throwing, which was code 21 I believe, (vtec solenoid) I was thinking that maybe the solenoid is sticking, due to not being used in a while? Does this make sense? Before the light comes on the car runs smooth, and responsive. Could the screen be clogged keeping it from operating smoothly, bad ecu, or something else I'm missing? Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks gusy

Have you tried another P13?

Don't currently have access to another p13 ecu, so I'm sending the one I bought back to exchange for a new one. Hopefully, after I get the new one, it'll fix itself. If not I'll come back looking for help :P

Well I ended up getting a replacement P13 ECU, and had the same problem. We are going to change out the air intake controller from the old intake to the one that came with the swap, just waiting on a hose from honda to do the swap. Has anyone else here end up with these problems? Also I read somewhere of grounding out the vtec wire, so its on non stop, and pro's/con's with this idea? Sorry for sounding like and idiot just not super knowledgeable on cars. Thanks again

A few things:

- Did you clean the VTEC solenoid?
- Check and adjust the TPS?
- Bleed the cooling system?

I have the EXACT SAME PROBLEM...I took the car to a local Honda shop and they told me the ecu was a paper weight. So I got another p13 and still had the same problem. So now I have ordered a tuned p28 and just got it in today. As soon as I get my wire tuck done and stuff plugged back in I'll give it a shot. But I would still really like to know what is causing the p13 issues.

Did the shop test out the car with another ECU?

Ya they tested it with a "chipped" p28 and it ran great, so I'm thinking that I might just have been unfortunate enough to get two bad ecu's.

Yeah when we got the h22 swap, we tore it apart and cleaned/checked everything when we reassembled it, changed all seals/gaskets. We bled the coolant system, and checked the TPS also. The guide I was following, said that we could use the intake from the h23 we had, but the manifold flanges didn't match up to the block, so we used the flange off of the h22 one, should we have swapped the "middle" part, that has the control valve on it also?? Also with the VTEC solenoid clean, but still throwing CEL could it just be a faulty unit?
The hose we ordered for the intake manifold should get here tomorrow so we'll try that next. Thank you again for the help guys.

You sure the guide didn't mean just the intake (the tube that is) was interchangeable? If it goes so far as to say to use the H23 intake manifold on the H22 head, I'd stop referring to it for anything as they're not compatible, like you saw, and that's a pretty big oversight. The only part that is interchangeable is the top portion, I'm guessing the butterfly valves too. Either way... from the sounds of it, you already had an H22 intake manifold? Should've just kept it on, regardless what the guide may or may not have told you...

One last question, if the car runs fine with the p14 ecu, is there any harm running that ecu and manually/externally activating the vtec? Thank you again

Look on the back of the engine and check above the oil filter. Make sure the Knock Sensor is plugged and in good condition.
