h22 engine swap

Helped needed. I thinking of dropping a h22 engine into my 92 base prelude. Question: Can I just swap the engine and leave the existing transmission? By doing so I can probably save $1000. It's a 5 speed if that makes a difference. Thanks

yes.
yes you can. the only thing is you will most likely drop out of vtec range when shifting.

keep the trans - it will save $$ You can get a h22 shipped for less than $1000, but that doesnt include the ecu

My h23 tranny didn't drop out of vtec any differently than the H22 tranny. (m2s4 vs. m2a4 ?)

I'm relatively new at this so what do you mean by dropping out of vtec range? Loss of power?

there is a wealth of information on here. search. but to be nice here is what i can recall.
3 different engines, each came with a trans designed for them.

base model (was it the f22?) had nice long gears. great for cruising and gas milage not so great for performance.

si (h23) had a trans with shorter gears than the base models trans but still longer than h22. a good compromise.

vtec (h22) had short gearing making it a blast to drive. keeping your rpms up when you shifted allowing you to stay in the "vtec range".

i could be mistaken on some of the info, and could probably add more details, but that's just the gist of it.

When you shift gears, your RPM will drop.

Say in 1st gear, you shift at 7800 RPM, in 2nd gear you'll start at about 4800 or 5000 rpm.. VTEC starts at 5200-5500 .. so you will drop out of Vtec until you accelerate back into that range.

I didnt notice a difference using my H23 tranny vs. when I put in an H22 tranny.

I had my H23 tranny for a long time, it did accelerate faster but both still dropped out of vtec until about 3rd gear - although with both trannys I did rev it high enough to stay in VTEC in 2nd

Ugh. You can't just say "H22 tranny" or "H23 tranny" because there are several different versions of each. Now if you say "M2F4/4G USDM VTEC tranny" or "M2S4/4G USDM Si tranny" then your statements might be correct.

Also: Here's a guide to the fully transmission list.

Thanks everyone for your insight. However after reading some old threads regarding vtec range, h22 and h23 engines, I was left with the proverbial question of which engine is better, h22 or h23?

I've decided, since I won't be racing this car, it would make more sense for me to go with a h23 engine instead. I just need an engine with a little more spunk and passing capabilities.

I was also left with the impression, correct me if I'm wrong, that a h23 engine cost less to fix or maintain. As well they seem to be more inexpensive to modify to produce the same amount of power of a vtec engine should I choose to do so.

Thanks again.

i was once at the same fork in the road in life. do i get another h23 or go with a h22.
the best i could find a h23 for was around 1500. this was almost 10 years ago so maybe they are cheaper and you might be able to find one from a junk yard. at the same time a h22 was only 1800. a friend ask me this question, what can you do for $300 that will get you 30 extra horses?

there are quite a few people that have built nice h23 so do not be the nay-sayer.
