grinding into 3rd

does anyone else have this problem when shifting into 3rd?

for me it feels like the synchros are jacked, or its just an adjustment, but i'm not that good with stuff like that.

anyone know what it could be? is it fixable or does the tranny have to be replaced?

thanks for any help guys.

Had the same prob.. I just got my tranny re-built. Grinding 3rd is a common prob with manual hondas.... your syncro is bad... you will need to replace it.

It's the clutch thats making it grind more than likely. In Hi-Performance Honda Handbook, they describe this. It' something you just have to deal with when you have a hi-pro clutch.

mine grinded in third so I took it to honda and they thought it was the syncros or a bent shift fork. Then they told me I wasnt pushing in my pedal enough and that was weird when it just started happening. I never new what it was because I got a jdm swap and it has a new tranny.

probably hoping you keep driving it like that grinding it to nothing and eventually having to have THEM completely restore your dead tranny

Mine grinds into 3rd EVERY shift now, but if i want a few seconds for rpm to drop to 1000 or less, or double clutch, its fine.

when racing or hauling ass i just shove it in, though.

And my clutch has 34k miles, and isn't a high performance. Honda synchros suck, plain and simple.

try double clutching....this may relieve some pressure and help keep from grinding.

me too!

i have the same problem when shifting into 3rd or 5th at high RPMs just like redpreludeVTEC9. everyone tells me its the synchros and that seems to be the diagnosis on po.com too. i guess its time for a new tranny. it just seems like a waste to spend $600 on 2 new syncros when i could have a new tranny with all good syncros. btw, whats the total cost for a new tranny installed?

take care,
tim

Its common

Count me in too... 5th gear grinds if I shift at over 80km/h even
if I double clutch. My trick is to shift under 80km/h and double clutch, this is when the tranny is syncronized w/ the engine.
I'm lucky it is only on 5th gear.. I'v learned to live w/ it.
