i have the same problem, cept mine sometimes instead of just grinding completly does not let me in gear so i have the beautiful grinding noise followed by a quick rev to close to 7500rpm because i shift to fast and let out to quick before i know it is in gear. anyways, judging by the opinion of my friend that is a mechanic, he said its my slave cylinder (its leaking), or my clutch. so in the absense of time to think plus i want a better grab, i bought a slave cylinder, an act clutch, and a fidanza flywheel. next week i should put it in so i will let you all know the results.

grinding in my experience (with my old h23) was due to my 3rd gear synchro being very out of alignment.

right now my H22 tranny isn't wanting to go into 2nd or 4th without a struggle, so i'm thinking it might be a slightly bent shift fork.

but i would say check your clutch master and slave cylinder, and then check your clutch. if its not any of those, then its time to start worrying about the tranny.

well i did grind 2nd it would just lock me out. right now it seems to be working fine. i just got everything installed but funnily i have not driven it. i didnt get it home until late. (my friend the mechanic just brought it back for me). anyways, he said now i have to watch out if it happens again that i could easily fudge up my engine cuz the rev limiter cant stop my rev in time. anyways, any problems with grinding now are due to my tranny like you said.
