Got head. Now, Lets talk Clearances.

When I first got my 95 SE prelude, I started it, and it had a very noisy valvetrain. I did a clearance adjustment to all 16 valves properly, and set them to .007I / .008E as Instructed to by the Tech at the dealership. I ran the engine again, still the same problem noisy valves, but not AS noisy. I was told that the valvetrain on this H23A is noisy, regardless. Not noticible al the time, particularly only at idle really.

I have double, and tripple checked my work on the clearances. (yes I made sure the cam lobes were in the correct position, so check clearances. I just got my engine all back together after the rebuilt head came back. I reinstalled the head did my clearances again to the said .007I / .008E and Closed it up. Started the engine, still I can hear the valve train.

I figured possibly, This H23A valvetrain sound just might be common as in.. Was always there even from factory. I was re-searching through the Service manual today, and I found a section about the valves which calls for .003-.004I / .006-.007E. for the H23A. OOPS The Tech was wrong and my cars sounding like hell because of it!!!

I dont recall seeing anywhere on either section saying VTEC or NON, but I'm going to double check on that, and regardless I'm going to re-adjust my valves to .004 Intake, and .006 exhaust. We'll see if that valve train noise calms down or clears up.

1.) Does anybody here know what their clearances are set at?

2.) Does anybody here have a noisy valvetrain too? (with or with out a recent adjustment)

*update/edit* I checked the manual again after arguing with the dealership, it does indeed say .003 and .006 I/E so Ill be back im going to re-adjust and see how it goes!

changed all intake to .003, and all exhaust to .006. Still have a ******* rattle sound coming from some where around cylinder 1, or the timing covers! Damn it.

I used the throttle under the hood to see when the sound gets louder or stops.. When its below maybe 3,000 rpms id say it has this rattle, all the sudden when the rpms increase more or stay over that it is just running like a pro, very powerful, very quiet, very fluid. its just perfect.. but this damn rattle sound coming from around the belt covers is really bugging me out.

Can i run the engine with the belt covers off and listen then or what? I gotta figure this rattle out, its the last thing i need to fix before that engine is about perfect. GRRRRRRRR

The engine is pretty silent now, i mean as silent as it can be. I dont have a problem with keeping up with the valve adjustments, but I would like to now find this rattle that comes from the timing covers i belive? Im not sure what it is, but when i use the throttle from under the hod it stops at a certain rpm as if on a switch. the rattle could be the timing cover vibrating against the other half of it.. or against the block of the stripping came off.. im not sure but its driving me nuts.

* non related* My apexi World sport supposed to be quiet exhaust also sucks. It buzzes like that crappy ricer **** i always make fun of.. I guess the jokes on me now! haha.

I don't know if this is true or not, but I remember reading somewhere that the reason the H series engines have noisy valves is because they use mechanical valve lifters as opposed to hydraulic ones which makes it noisier.

Again though, I do not know if this is accurate.

Has anybody ever tried adjusting their valves tighter than the factory specs?

rattling in the engine bay makes me feel "Embarassed" Like i cant show the motor i just rebuilt to anybody because its so annoying that my best friend goes "are you sure this is running right" It just doesnt sound like it.. Damn.

doing the clearances is a piece of cake, 10mm socket to remove the valve cover, then 12MM wrench, flathead screw driver and a feeler gauge to do the clearance adjustments. Took me all of like 15 mins to adjust them all.. if you have thools get to it! It may quit your engine down a bit!

I've read about a "flapping" noise comming from the timing belt. If that's what it is, it could be your auto-tensioner. Check it out and if it's the source, fix it quick.

I just had my entire head rebuilt at a machine shop costing me close to $500.00 and i put the engine back together, still at 2,500+ rpms to about 4,000rpm it was making a horrible sound.. I opened up the bottom end and my Crank is Funked and my main bearings are all destroyed. How do you spin 4 bearings? I dont know, but who ever owned this car before me was sure able to.

mine taps too, i allways wondered what the hell it is, but check this out, maybe its not theclearance at all, cause obviously we all have done em over and over again.

Keep in mind that we have Free Floating Rockers. the tap could be comming from that.

mine randomly taps too, sometimes it does it bad sometimes it dont at all. its strange.

but its not a constant tap liek a valve tap would be.

thats why im thinking it could be the rockers.
