Going so well...then the pulley bolt!!

Hi

I am half way (maybe 1/4 way!!) through changing the timing and balancer belts. I hit the problem with the pulley bolt removal.

I have actually bought the pulley holding tool which has a bar and is currently jammed against the floor holding the pulley, so this works great

My car is jacked up a bit and the wheel is off.

Problem

I have read other posts on this site which suggest using a long pole to leverage the socket sitting on the pulley bolt, but there just doesn't seem to be any room anywhere around the bolt that I could get substantial leverage!

I can't put the wrench in from the top as no room and under the wheel arch is not accessible enough for a long pole. My 2ft (just under) torque wrench goes under the arch but i cannot move it as i can't get any weight behind it!

Am I missing something!

Any help greatly appreciated!

Cheers in advance, Chris

put some extensions together, then rest the extension joint with the breaker bar on a car stand (that you put under the car when you jack it up), then use the long pipe

Cheers for that.

Got some 1/2 extensions today so will try that tomorrow. The sun has set upon me in good old England for now!!

That picture was very helpful. Kind of a "DOH!" moment. Why didn't i think of that!

Cheers guys.

just a warning....when the pulley breaks loose, it will make a LOUD metal on metal screeching sound...you will think you broke something - it's "normal"

and once you do it once, you will feel like a master mechanic

Timing

The pulley bolt is out!!

As the whole job has gone along I have hit problem after problem.

I am really stuck now though! I got to the belts, stuck the pin punches in the cams as advised and removed belts etc. Changed the water pump (pretty easy that one so well chuffed) then removed and changed the two belt tensioners.

No problems there. Here are the biggest problems.

1. When i put the new timing belt on i noticed the cams were not properly aligned although pin punches were installed! The alignment marks are off and if i try to turn the right cam to the right slightly so it is aligned it jumps back. Only talking a few mm but it's like half a tooth! Not sure how to align this now!

I'm also not sure what they were like before the old belt came off as i assumed the pin punches would hold them still!

2. I stupidly removed the crankshaft key before marking the postition of the crankshaft pulleys in relation to the balancer belt pulleys and timing pulley. I think the pulleys moved as i took off the belts! DOH!!

3. When the pulleys appear to line up exactly to the alignment marks, the teeth on the belt don't fit properly (it is the correct F22B belt too)!

Q1. Am i right in thinking I align the crankshaft pulley on the flywheel and not the crankshaft key with the mark on the engine?

Q2. Is the balancer belt alignment just as important as the timing belt? I know it has some alignment marks, just wondering if i have to worry as much with this one.

Q3. How do I re-align the cam pulleys as they don't move easy? Is there another way to tell if each cam is in the correct position or which one is out?

This has had me all weekend, tried a few different things but getting nowhere.

Not sure if this should be another thread either!

Cheers , Chris

the camshafts are a pain...you have to turn them where they are at TDC and hold them there (or get a friend/mate to help you). they move inwards by themselves.
