Glowing cat after H22 swap

Hello,

I am having some problems with my H22 swap... It backfires and the cat gets red hot. The shield isnt red, just the piping. Is it supposed to do that?

We checked the cam timing 3 times, the first 2 times we used the arrows to line them. Then we used the marks on the sprockets to line up with the block. Now the engine runs much smoother but still backfires a little. I need to re check the ignition timing now that we adjusted the T-belt again, but we only adjusted the intake cam so the timing should be good still I think.

I searched and read that bad injectors or an exhaust leak can cause this?

I do have a TPS sensor cel that I have to sort out...I've tried but cant get any Voltage reading on a meter and help on that would be great too. I've tried getting it from the harness at the ecu, backprobing the sensor while it pluged in, taking the plug off the JDM harness and plugging it in and checking the exposed wires I stripped. No reading at all. I'm using the helms info to check it, Green is (_) and yellow is (+) IIRC....can this cause backfiring?

Running too rich will send unburt fuel into your exhaust system where it will catch in the cat and ignite, causing a glowing cat.

Check your A/F ratio.

the exhaust flows just as it did before, doesn't smell like gas anymore either. The first time we fired it up it smelled.

Damn, this is frustrating. I rechecked the ign timing and it seems to be fine. you do the adjustments at idle or higher rpm?

For most people that did JDM H22 swaps, did the motor need time to "knock the cobwebs off" I took it out for a test drive and it had little power and the intake seeems to pop. like its backfiring through the intake pipe?

thanks for the replys BTW

yup... running way too rich;

which ECU are you using?

also, if the Throttle position sensor is off it MIGHT cause the ECU to add more fuel; but I'm not sure.

and IIRC, a wideband meter should give you your a/f ratio.

well you should do some general maintanence before putting in a jdm engine.

most will say just buying the motor and installing it will yield sup-par results, although some have had good results.

but to my knowledge it shouldn't take more than a few minutes for the engine to run normally. btw have you tried searching a little? i seem to remember some post topics with this whenever i was doing some research with a jdm swap

Yes I've searched... I got the motor for Hmotors and did the following:

Hondata IM gasket
New OEM timing and balance belts
manual tensioner conversion
New water pump
NGK blue wires and iridium plugs
Has a newer cap and rotor
P13 ECU

can the cat be clogged if the exhaust feels like its flowing well? should I clean the O2 sensor because of the gas mixture that hit it? could that be it?

What is the best way to test the TPS? I will search on this more also.

anymore help is appreciated

I used a cable splice on the wire going into the ECU for the TPS to measure the voltage, seemed to be the easiest way to get the voltage without cutting any wires.
