hello i am new to the site and i have owned a 4th gen lude before when i was younger and did not realize what a great car i had. Ok well not great it had its problems but anyway i am looking to get another one,the one i had was a 92 si 4ws h23 auto. as ive gotten older and worked on many hondas and became more familiar with the cars i decided to get another 4th gen lude however Im not really sure what i should look for when buying one used private party. Are there any problems that i should be aware of with this gen of prelude? I am looking to get another h23(boost is in my future) but would be happy with the h22 as well and as far as the f22 goes no way in hell!! i dont want an auto but if its in my price range i would accept it. Are the auto trannys in the lude any good till i could swap a manual in say...a year later not boosting it till i get the manual trans and the engine rebuilt. basically im just looking for any common problems with the prelude and if they are easy fixes. Seeing as i am a starving college student i really dont have immediate funds to buy a $2800 car and a week later get a new trans or motor. Thank you for your time and any advice or help is appreciated
h23 is not a bad engine if taken care of .. altho neither is any engine.. 1 look at brakes.. rad., tires, halfshafts, exaust, struts, timming, rust...etc etc..like any car... h22 is what you would proly want to end up with... manual of course... but do whats in your price range for now and upgrade later.. there are plenty of old threads that will help you upgrade your lude so just search... g/l and welcome
i prefer the h23 cuz i heard the h22 does not take to boost as well because of the coating on the sleeves and thanks i have an idea of where to start with the upgrades start with I/H/E,igniton,ground kit, clutch, and cams (h23) any reviews on crower stage 1 cams for h23 on the board??...and a few NOS stickers to bump me up to 300 hp(jk)
h22 can and cant... no matter what engine it is i would allways recomend rebuilding the block.. ie sleaving and getting forged items.. if the h22 is rebuilt it can handle it fine.. the h23 has a different compression which would also be why some choose it as well... either way i would rec. a rebuild of the lower half no matter what engine you choose
what about the larger displacement of the h23 also just incase i decide to have a fun daily driver out of the lude what engine takes better to bolt ons (ex..cams,I/H/E,ect) i planned on just getting it rebuilt about a year after i get it to make sure i have all the cash to have it machined, blueprinted and ported and polished with the forged internals all done at once and depending on the decision of going turbo or not going with the correct compression ratio with the pistons (if no turbo then obviously higher compression) i just want to have a VERY fun but reliable daily driver ohh and are the auto trannys any good or are they junk like the 5th gens?
well h23 has less compression than a h22a naturaly.. but the h22 has about 30 more horsepower and is fun to drive.. ive never owend a h23 but its still a prelude.. h23 have proly just as many bolt ons as the h22a.. so if your looking for more fun and spending as much money on bolt on parts go with the h22.. auto trannys i have no cluse on since all ive ever owend are manual trans for like all my cars.. it really depends how you treat your tranny as with every car.. harder shifts less of a live etc etc
gotcha thanks alot i think im just gonna look for an h22 with a 5spd no i hear nothing but praise about that engine on the forums found one on craigslist for 5 grand with 130000 miles gonna try to talk the dealership down to 3 grand cash out the door. Orlando don't have to many decent ludes running around
Thats on the trans and body, engine was replaced in 2006 due to failing oil pump and wife driving it. I would say the engine has between 100 to 150 thousand on it, i got the car when i was 16, i think it maybe had 15,000 on it at the time, i have learned alot from that car keeping her going all these years and even installing a energy suspension bushing kit just to do it, i have replaced ignition, distributor, oil filter housing gasket, shocks, rotors, calipers, steel braided break lines, wheel bearings,Full oem exhaust, sun roof pannel(even painted it myself),vss and sensor, and much much more all done by myself, but rust has started to creep in and general neglect over the past two years since getting my 5th gen has made the body go downhill quick. She is completley stock frost white. All that time i never changed the trans fluid once and she still shifts smooth, hell i havent changed the oil or washed it in the past two years. Guess it might be time to let her go.
I believe you have to weld in a plate in to reinforce the fire wall where the clutch mounts when you swap from auto to manual.
The F22 has cast iron sleeves and low compression if you are just talking boost, and they are dime a dozen in Accords. But the motor isn't going to be as fun to drive as the H22 compared at stock.
There are plenty of I/H/E bolt-ons for all 3 motors.
SEARCH is your friend! GL!
POST PICS WHEN YOU BUY!!
Rust is common on the rear fenders and sunroof so look it over good.
where you at sky and how much we talkin?? and shrooms ive been around the f22b alot both b1 and b2 great engines for boost but absolutely no fun ive built 3 f22 engines its time to move up to DOHC and real power (even had a buddy put h23 head on f22b block)
Not selling yet, was just showing you that the auto trans in a 4th gen is strong. When i do part with the car i think i am just gonna give it away to someone who will fix her up. All this talk got my wife all sentimental and she drove it to work today.
