General maintaince question.

Ok, well I have a question on wether or not to get my timming belt replaced now or later. I have a 93 VTEC, with 72,500 on it, it says in the manual to change at 90,000, or somthing like 72 mounths. thanks for you input.

Its better to change it sooner than later...you dont want that thing to break.

Maybe I'm paranoid but I always change mine at 60k. At the rate I put on the mileage, that is only once every 5 years anyway.

Change the timing belt before 90k... and make sure to change the water pump at the same time. If the timing belt goes out, you will end up with a bunch of bent valves, and a car that doesn't work.

Ask fourthgeneration about having your timing belt break... he had a really fun time replacing all the broken parts.

Around 75k is the optimal mileage.

I would change it soon as others have stated. I waited until 96K and my stock belt was still in great condition.

Also if the Timing belt breaks it usually screws things up pretty bad, but in my wife's old civic it broke and caused no damage, just replaced the belt and it was fine.

THe timing belt will usually only cause damage if it breaks at speeds above like 30mph...

I have 88k on mine and I'm gonna drive 2000 miles to wreckdiver's how to have him help me replace it. wish me luck! hehhee. i hope i make it!

Thats because the vavles don't go down into the region where the pistons travel so if it breaks the pistons cannot fly into the valves and bend them. A lot of cars are like this. The H23 and H22 are not because they are high compression so if it breaks you are screwed.

To have the dealer do it is around $600. Do the harmonic balancer and serpentine belts at the same time.

Dont go to a dealer... either get an independent Honda mechanic to do the work, or buy a helms manual and just pay for the price of the belts, and water pump. Of course, it will take awhile to replace the belts and pump because it is very tight for space in that area of the engine bay. Invest in some "Mechanix" work gloves... just ask Brendon2k about bloody knuckles changing the TB.
