Gauges not working!

I have a '92 si. When my headlights are off my fuel n temp gauges light up real bright. As soon as i turn my headlights on my fuel n temp gauges are not as bright. My speedometer n tachometer don't light up at all. I checked for blown fuses but they are all fine. I have a set of EL gauges w/inverter box. Now, if i install my EL gauges will i still have this problem?

Thanx in advance

It's funny that I just came across this post. I have a '92 Si and the other night I was going out and when I started my car I noticed that my speedo/tach gauge lights were out- not the fuel/temp gauges or the clock. When I got up the road I also noticed that either my headlights or PIAA fogs weren't on, so I pulled over to check things out. The fogs were off, (headlights on) but I also had no taillights. I DID have all 3 brake lights functioning, though.

The next day I went through all the fuses first and I found it was either the #43 or #44 fuse (20A fuse) was blown. I went through the schematics and troubleshooting diagrams, tried a couple of things, and blew another 20A fuse. I gave up and called the dealership where it will be looked at Thursday. I'm really interested in finding out the cause of the problem.

I have no idea what kicked it off because I used the car 4 days before (at night, with headlights and fogs on) and things were absolutely normal. The day this happened I checked my fluids and topped them off before getting into the car, but I didn't even touch any electrical connections, and then these lights were out when I started the car. Initially I assumed that the bulb for the speedo/tach blew since the car is a '92. It seemed odd to me to come across a post from someone with a similar problem.

I<3 my LUDE: I believe the fuel/temp gauges are normally brightest during the day, and then they dim somewhat at night when your lights are turned on so that they aren't super bright at night. If you are ever driving during the day in a rain storm and you turn your headlights on you'll notice the fuel and temp. gauges will get pretty dim for daylight use, which you might not normally notice.
Maybe you might want to take a peek at your taillights too....

You can adjust the brightness of the fuel/temp to make them super bright if you like.

It may be the fuse causing your gauges to do that, but if not, installing thosing gauges should be fine. You can use your stock harness and just switch a few wires (there's a writeup around here somewhere). The EL gauges are constantly lit by the tube behind, so lights on or lights off, they need to work.

Chester: To change the gauges to EL, is it a matter of changing just the lighting for the gauges, or is it a complete gauge swap?

BTW: Found the source of my electrical gremlin...

I had a wire under the hood that had a small section of the outer housing worn away. The wires inside were touching and caused the short that knocked out my taillights, speedo/tach lights and my PIAA fogs (20A fuse). I tried to find the exact spot where the Honda tech wrapped the area, but he had left for the day. From now on I'll have to give the engine bay a good look around and wrap any areas with cracked or split outer covering so I don't have something similar happen again.

It was more a pain in the butt than anything, but it did limit me from driving at night. At least the Honda dealership didn't even charge me for the visit- a nice surprise.

Thanks for the info chester.

I like the look of the EL gauges, but I probably won't do the swap since the stock color lights are also in the HVAC cluster, so I won't have to tear everything apart to get the lighting to match all around.

The HVAC controls match the EL gauges.
