It's funny that I just came across this post. I have a '92 Si and the other night I was going out and when I started my car I noticed that my speedo/tach gauge lights were out- not the fuel/temp gauges or the clock. When I got up the road I also noticed that either my headlights or PIAA fogs weren't on, so I pulled over to check things out. The fogs were off, (headlights on) but I also had no taillights. I DID have all 3 brake lights functioning, though.
The next day I went through all the fuses first and I found it was either the #43 or #44 fuse (20A fuse) was blown. I went through the schematics and troubleshooting diagrams, tried a couple of things, and blew another 20A fuse. I gave up and called the dealership where it will be looked at Thursday.

I'm really interested in finding out the cause of the problem.
I have no idea what kicked it off because I used the car 4 days before (at night, with headlights and fogs on) and things were absolutely normal. The day this happened I checked my fluids and topped them off before getting into the car, but I didn't even touch any electrical connections, and then these lights were out when I started the car. Initially I assumed that the bulb for the speedo/tach blew since the car is a '92. It seemed odd to me to come across a post from someone with a similar problem.
I<3 my LUDE: I believe the fuel/temp gauges are normally brightest during the day, and then they dim somewhat at night when your lights are turned on so that they aren't super bright at night. If you are ever driving during the day in a rain storm and you turn your headlights on you'll notice the fuel and temp. gauges will get pretty dim for daylight use, which you might not normally notice.
Maybe you might want to take a peek at your taillights too....
