gas mileage went way down

my gas mileage went way down about a week or two ago. just wonder if its the fuel filter or maybe something else?
and yes i did a search didnt find anything useful.

have your timing checked and yes your fuel filter could
also hinder that.. i have this same problem, but i think its my timing ..

Does your engine act wierd? It is not likely that your fuel filter is culprit. Start off with plugs, rotors, etc... Or try gas from a different station and see if anything changes. Also the O2 sensor may be causing this as well... But just check your timing and ignition before you start replacing anything. I've had this problem and it was indeed my timing.

i dont mean to sound stupid but can i check my own timing our do i have to have it takin in?

You can check it with a timing light, that that's about $50 from Sears. What I did was advance or retard the distributor, reset the ECU and just go for a test drive. If it's the same or gotten worst, I take it in and play the the distributor some more until it feels better when I drive it. I would take it to a shop to have them check the timing, shouldn't be that much...
