Funky tachometer

Hey guys. I'm picking up a 94 Prelude VTEC this weekend, and one thing I noticed about the car is that the tach didn't work right. It seemed that once I started the car up, the tach just slowly climbed up, regardless of the engine's true RPM. It crept like that all the way til it hit 7k, and stopped climbing.

Any ideas on what this might be?
Thanks.

Could be a fault in the tach signal, or it could be a faulty step motor in the gauge cluster itself. Check the tach signal wire at the distributor.

Is that a blue wire? I'm just thinking off the top of my head which wire that will be. Haven't downloaded the FSM yet.
