Fuel sensor?

I think I am having a problem with my fuel sensor. It doesn't always register right on the dash. Cuz one night I filled her up and drove around everywhere then I raced then drove some more and my fuel guage on my dash still said I had a full tank. Is there a way that I can fix this problem?

This is actually normal, I can drive 50-75 miles before the first bar turns off. Virtually every gas gauge is engineered like this (and dumb people are to blame.)

The reason for this is a gas gauge works but a thing that floats in the tank. The thing that happens is the think floats to the top and hits the roof of the gas tank before the tank is completley full. So a few gallons have to go out if you fill up all the way before it will read gas missing. The same effect happens on the other end. Your gas guage will read nothing when you sill have some fuel left. The most I have pushed it is maybe 20 miles w/0 bars.

The gas gauge is designed that way. People want to be fooled into thinking they are getting good gas mileage. Even if it means that last 1/4 tank flies. Car and Driver did a story on this and when Ford made a truly accurate guage people complained of "poor gas mileage." This perception was based of course on a fuel gauge that wasn't lying, they didn't actually measure MPG. And duh, of course they build in a conservative margin when the tank is on "empty." Repeat after me - people are stupid!

What I am talking about only happens on reading completely full or empty. BTW I think the gauge moves down correctly from f to e.

Then you'd be wrong, and you're one of those people who like to be fooled
