Front End/Engine Shudder/Thumping

Hi All

I posted a similar question a few weeks ago, but I don't think I was specific enough. Sorry for the repost.

92 SI 2.3 Auto Trans

My daughter drives the car and she has said the car is shaking periodically at highway speed. A few weeks ago, I took it out for a bit and could not make it happen. She took me out in the car today and it took awhile for it to happen, but when travelling on the highway, 65+, if you press on the gas, you feel a pulsing or thumping from the front end. It almosts feels like the tire. This took about 10 miles of highway driving for it to happen. Sometimes it does not happen at all. When it happens it's pulsing about 3 times a second. In general, the engine revs just fine, transmission shifts fine (auto). It's like thump-thump-thump... when placing the engine under load as in pressing the gas when climbing a hill, but not enough to force a downshift. It's very intermittant and does not seem to be noticible and low speed. Also when it happens it seems that there is a loss of power. It doesn't feel like the engine is missing or faltering.

I'm looking for ideas on where to look..transmission? suspension? tires? (all have been fine until now).

Thanks

Ray

I agree it sounds like motor mounts or possibly axels spinning and catching causing it to thump. If that helps any.

^check all of the above and make sure your radius rod bushings are decent and torqued to spec while you're down there

Unfortunately I didn't note the RPMs. It was probably around 4k-5kas we were going 65+ and pressing on the gas. Didn't need to have the trans downshift for the problem to occur.

Motor mounts maybe, buy why would it be so intermittant and take awhile for it to occur when it does?

Thanks

Ray

probably because theres not as much pressure against it untill you get to those speeds.....if those arn't the problems i have 2 more thoughts for you replace the fuel filter and the cat converter, cuz my camaro was doing the same thing when i bought it.

Thanks to all for the replies. It is a tricky problem and was wondering if there was a common thread for this, like so many of issues that pop up for any car. Probably not I considered the clogged cat issue as well, I had that problem years ago on a car, but I think it was pretty consistant. I'm just trying to not shotgun it, especially since I don't have the time or the expertise to deal with steering, suspension and transmission issues. So I plan to have a transmission diagnostic run (unless it's way expensive), get a tune up (plugs, fuel filter, etc)..needs one anyway.

I wouldn't think it's the transmission. Have you tried turning overdrive off? hell, try turning teh car off on the highway (you driving) while it's causing the problem. rule out the drivetrain.
it might be loading up a bit because it's when you're accelerating. do some more diagnosing, as it could be a lot.

This sounds like a worn inner CV joint. It will shake like an unbalanced wheel under acceleration.

Try torquing lug nuts to spec and test out the wheel bearings and start troubleshooting from there.

I have the same exact problem...where between 60-70 mph upon acceleration, the pedal vibrates and sounds like a constant thumping. It never happens when slowing down and once I get past 70mph, its fine and under 60 mph its fine also. I went to a tranny shop and got new engine mounts and front axles. Havent gotten a chance to go at that speed yet (speed limits around me are low), but Im hoping that fixed the problem...as some people said it may on this thread.

ive just got the same problem on my prelude, shakes at around 100kph, when accelerating. a shudder of the dash would be the best explanation, i just got the car, wandering if replacing the engine mounts and axles worked?.its done 226000kms about 140000miles. thanks
curious to know how you got on as it sounds the exact same as me!.

My lude is doing the same thing. 95 jdm vtech. It's done it since the swap about a year ago, almost feels like misfire only between 60-70mph, not really on accel, but when cruising - holding it steady. It is very intermittent. I've replace the axles, have new tires, have new struts, new tie rod ends, and took the cat off.. so you can rule out all of that, I'm really wondering about the torque converter?? I'm no good at troubleshooting trans and worse at an auto. I do have a little bit of tranny fluid seeping around the case seam but not enough to drip or leave any puddles, and the fluid is fine. So I can help with the ruling out part but I still haven't found the problem.. let me know if you do.
