free mods! like camshaft weight reduction... (1lb off shaft=21 lbs off total weight)

thats what i heard. my motor just died and im getting a new one so now i have time to take parts from this one and modify them perfectly at my leasure. i wanna try knifing my stock camshafts. anyone else do this? i was also thinking of drilling a big hole in the center and pressing in aluminum rod. is that safe to do? i wanna do stuff thats cheap modding cuz i dont want to spend money. you may see some interesting guides/blueprints/etc. here from what i do. what do you guys think of this? i have nothing to lose. im probabbly going to do some really good mods while the ludes off the road. i think im gonna atempt my own port and polish, do my camshafts, bore my own throttle body, design and machine my own fuel rails and maybe polish my intake manifold and make my own gasket out of phenolic. this has alot of potential over time. (i dont get too too long at work to do this stuff). thats all i can think of for now any other suggestions???

It sounds like you really haven't researched these mods at all.

You don't knife a camshaft, you knife a crank.

Drilling a hole in the camshaft=bad news. You will totally screw up the balance and probably the structural integrity as well.

DIY port and polish jobs have the potential for disaster. It's actually a fairly refined process that requires a bit of know-how. Do you have access to a fully equipped machine shop, complete with 4-axis CNC mill? The tools needed for the processes you described probably cost as much as a house. Why dont you forge youre own pistons, shot-peen your internals, and sleeve your own block while youre at it?!

My personal opinon, it sounds like you are just being cheap, not smart. Pay someone who knows what they are doing to build your engine THE RIGHT way.

i work in a machine shop but we dont have a 4 axxis cnc. the crankshaft-camshaft thing was a typo. the rod sounded like it could be a good idea if properly centered and the aluminum would fill the place of the hole.

*edit* we do have a cnc but its 2 axxis controlled. thats what id use to make the tb bored round.

well I say you go ahead and do it and take pics while you're at it. Good luck, let us know how it runs after you do all that stuff!

Well, as far as the major stuff, I wouldn't really mess with it. I'd rather not spend months working on my car to get it up and running again, only to mess it up. As for boring out the TB yourself, you'll also need a larger plate(I forget the actual name at the moment) to accomodate for the larger hole in the TB.

I like the idea but I don't think this would be the equivalent of removing 21 lbs. I know it is a spinning mass but it is the distance from the center of spinning that determines how much weight it "feels" like you loose. With drilling out the center not much of the removed mass was that at all from the center.

a good machine shop can fabricate you a new butterfly for the larger bore in the throttle body relatively cheap but after that I would leave it to the pro's if you do it right expect about 7-10 ponies from the TB. Good Luck Bro

If he works in a machine shop - he does not need to be a pro to taper, bore or stamp out a new butterfly valve

How's the fabrication going so far - did you ever attempt it?

Man, half the dudes here can't even seem to make their engines last longer than a week when they have it PROFESSIONALLY done. I doubt doing it yourself, although saving money, would allow your engine to last more than a good fire-up.
