fans only work when car off!

Hey guys i searched the fourms but it seems that it is very rare this problem. What happends is the car over heats. All bars go to H on the temp gauge. It seems that the fan or the A/C fan do not turn on while the car is on. When I turn the car off I hear the cooling fan indeed turn on but when I turn on the A/C I do not hear the fan turning. Something doesn't sound right here.... any help?

check the fan relay

This isn't as uncommon as you'd think, I've heard of this several times.

I bet both fans work when a/c on!

Sorry i had to but ya this is a common problem with lots of threads on it. But ill be helpful anyway, one or both of your fan switches maybe dead. Also do you have a h22a swap? The procedure to test the switches is in the helms btw. And you really need to tell us if both fans come on when you hit the a/c button that will help.

It doesn't matter if the car is on or off, both fans do not turn on when I hit the AC button. I have the Prelude VTEC stock model it came with the h22a1 from honda.

MAJOR UUUUUUPDATE!!!!!!

Wait a second, let’s back up. ! So today I realized that maybe it isn't the fan related. I'm sitting in traffic today and I noticed while I was stopped the one fan was running. The second time when I was pulling into work heard the one fan running again; I left the car running got out and saw indeed it was running. The car is still overheating though like crazy! Do both fans need to work in order to get full benefits of the cooling fans? I thought the second one was for the A/C. By the way, when I press the A/C button I still do not get any A/C and the fan doesn't turn still. Now see if I'm driving along it doesn't over heat so I guess we can rule out head gasket.

Only the main fan should turn on when the engine is hot and needs to be cooled.

When you turn on your AC, that is the only time both fans should be running.
The reason your second fan isn't turning on is because you have a separate problem with your AC.. whether it's lack of refrigerant pressure, lack of compressor clutch signal, or a mechanical problem, I don't know... but that's why the 2nd fan isn't turning on.

As far as why your car is overheating even though your rad. fan turns on.. could be tons of things.. water pump, thermostat, bad coolant, not enough coolant....

Here is some more info for you guys. Yesterday I let the car idle at my house. As it heated up I noticed the single cooling fan kick in and watched the temp gauge go one bar over normal temp. I then inspected the AC fan and kinda gave it a head start buy spinning it and TADA it started spinning but very slowly. Is it possible that sometimes the car uses both fans depending on temp to cool the engine? Because the AC button wasn't on.
