How are you so sure that, 1) you need a head gasket, 2) your head is cracked?

Although, yes, those things can/will make your engine overheat... But there are other things that may be happening that will make you loose coolant and cause your car to overheat.

Otherwise, as far as cost effective goes (assuming your engine head is cracked):
1) Try the parts classifieds to see if somebody is trying to sell their engine head.
2) Check eBay for one as well.

sounds like you just need another h23 head. $800 isn't that much when you factor in labor. Yeah its nice to have vtec but you should want a proper install rather than a setup that could break down the ways or be more in the long run.

you have to have a working STOCK head in order to modify, i havent seen anyone produce and end-user premodified head.

have you ever seen a prelude head gasket? the only way i could see one going is if you had pure water and it rusted , and the coolant hose being ripped probably cause your over heat, replace the coolant hose, and your thermostat, two things you can do by yourself, make sure that the thermostat is in the right way. and you bleed the system correctly, that will cost you 50 dollars or less. if it doesn't work. plan b.
