Well while it looked nice on the outside it was slow on the inside. F22 135hp
Well the kid got tired of being picked on and has decided to swap in a JDM engine/tranny combo. I told him I'de help him with the swap since I am mechanicly inclined, and I have my honda bible. And save him on the cash of getting it done elswhere.
Some shop was gonna charge him $2500 for the install. But with the $$ he's saving in doing it himself he has decided to slap a turbo on it too.
Now I can handle the swap..but I know nothing about turbos. So I need aheads up from all you turbo experts give me a list of wat this guy will need for parts. Now I already know the basics
Ignition, fuel uprades, turbo timer and saftey gauges..but what else.
We will be doing this job over the whole winter and I am planning on a full detailed write up with pics. And I mean detailed..no offense to P2W but I wanna cover every nut and bolt so we can al see what goes into this kinda of install.
depends on the kit. If he goes F-max, EVERYTHING you need will come with it - injectors, pre-programmed fuel controller, wastegate set properly... you'll have to drill a hole in the oil pan but other then that everything will be bolt on.
i cant really help you out.. but a full detailed writeup on the swap and turbo would be a great benefit to the entire community. im sure you could get an article on hondaprelude.com with that. good luck man.
Sorry Machine Head, can’t help you with the turbo issue. But in the subject of writing up full detail for this engine swap and adding turbo indeed would be a very good idea, you might even want to make a book out of it with full illustration instruction and strongly focus on those tricky areas.
Good luck with the swap and really looking forward for this project . Oh, before I go I would like to wish everyone here a prosperous New Year.
are you swapping h23 or h22? just curious?
yeah, details on the swap would be really nice. I'm planning a swap over the coming summer and DONT want to pay someone else to do it.
best thing to do is go with a turbo kit, that a company actually makes for our ludes, this way youve got the instructions on hand on how to assemble it. The honda bible should tell you how to take off everything. Last time i checked there was a "how to remove your engine" write up in there.
good luck...damn that things gonnnna be faaasssssst....
I agree that it would definitely be easier to go with a kit, and I've heard F-max comes with just about everything needed.
Dr. James always said it would be cheaper to go with a custom kit, and that you would get better results. But since it isn't your car, go with a kit and save yourself a headache. So if it doesn't turn out as expected, you can blame it on the kit.

The engine is a 220hp JDM, with LSD tranny and ecu. The goal is to net 300 whell hp with the turbo kit. Custom ground cams and a port & polish have already been mentioned.
So the Fmax kit comes with everything I'll need huh

The Fmax website does a great job in letting you rest assured in their product package. Since I will be going turbo soon (undecidedly, in terms of time and money, but soon, nevertheless), I went to their site. It seems like you'll get the TOTAL package w/ them, and from what I've heard, they have awesome customer support. Good luck.

Actually it's the repair manual that the dealers Mechanics use. Almost identical to the helms exept it has dealer part numbers and every nut and bolt size. Problem is you need to be a Honda mechanic to order this book. I got mine by pure luck. But the Helms is the next best thing
Not an expert on turbos but ill share my experiences and thoughts with you....
As some of you may have heard i have a 96 prelude Si, i put a h22 vtec head on the h23 block... then i started thinking about going turbo so i did some shopping and asking around... the 2 kits that came up as being the most popular among preludes is the FMAX as you all have mentioned and the DRAG3... but from what i heard and now know the DRAG3 is better than FMAX, there was something about having to install in another injector in the manifold for the FMAX kit, thats not the case with the DRAG3. So my decision was to get a Drag3 kit for around $2700. Before i got around to it i ran into a good deal on a 99 civic Si with a lot of mods on it so the turbo project was put on hold. However now im starting to have some thoughts on putting the turbo kit on the civic rather than the prelude because ive heard of better results on the civic than the prelude for some reason, of course the weight difference is a factor in that.
By the way... today i was looking on www.thepartstrader.com and saw several turbo kits for sale, there were several listed for preludes for around $2000.
Nah... theres so much talk about it not lasting but those people who talk havent actually done it to actually know... the car runs, idles, sounds beautifully! The only problem i have is the redline is still at 6400 rather than 7400, still trying to figure out why. It can cost anywhere from 1000 to 1500 and even more.. It all depends on whether you can find used parts or having to buy the little misc. stuff from the dealer. It also depends on what you want to do like putting a vafc and headers like i did cause i couldnt find a used down pipe. If you can find all used parts i think you could do it for about 1000.
i think moroso has a oil pan that has theholes for the turbo already there not sure how good they are or how much it would be but seems nice not to hvw to drill anything in the oilpan yourself
