Erratic RPM Jumping NOT at idle...

I've seen a thread about this somewhere, either on H-T or PO, but I can't seem to find it.. My searching skills seem to suck horribly. Back to the Subject, While driving, if I step on the gas alittle harder than usualy, the RPm jumps from lets say, 3K-4K. Sometimes it hops around even worse. It even almost hit hte mph needle . This occurs more frequently during the night or when accesories are on like A/C. I was thinking it was the alternator, but I would like to see if anyone has had this problem as well. Thanks in advance.

Randy

EDIT: Seems as if My dizzy is going out?? I'm checking for any va leaks right now..

Does the needle just jump, or does the engine RPM actually change too?

THe actually RPM changes, but not as dramatically as the needle.

Seems That I need to change the ignitor. I checked hondaautomotiveparts.com and it shows the ignitor and the heat sink seperately for cheaper than the assy together.... Is there a difference in purchasing them seperatly, then the kit.

The piece you want is generally referred to as the ICM (ignition control module) on this board. You can buy the ignitor at Advance for less money, and the part is just as good (or bad however you look at it ) The part will come with some conducting grease that you NEED to apply between the heat sink and the ICM. If the ICM does not come with this grease, you can also buy that from advance. If you want to go the HAP route, then just buy the ICM by itself. It's easy to replace, and just make sure all the leads are securely attached when you put it back in. Good luck.

my car used to do something like that...it would also shut off in the middle of driving...or i would be sitting at the light, and the rpms would start jumping for no reason..., and sometimes when i started moving, it started jumping for no reason as i pressed the gas. That was linked to my distributor. I got a new distributor from honda, and a ICM (ignition control module, a small electric part that goes inside the distributor...which was mainly the problem) from pep boys, and that fixed the problem. this was about a year ago.
