Engine very hot and smoke from the back of engine bay

Folks,

I have a 94 vtec which recently started having a problem. Everytime I drive it for anything more than 5 mins the engine get super hot! The temp gauge is right in the middle, however. But it is so hot that tocuhing any of the hoses, much less the rad, is almost impossible. On top of which I see smoke rising from the back of the engine bay.

I have checked my coolant fluid level which seems to be fine. Also, did recently replace a couple of the rad hoses, due to cracking...so those should not be a problem. About 6 months ago I pretty well replaced all the belts, water pump, thermostat, etc...on the car. Anybody have ideas on what this could be? I'm concerned the engine could blow or something...

did you bleed the system? i had i similar problem after replacing hoses on my 92 with air bubbles in the coolant system causing it to overheat, also the radiator cap it self could be the problem. open the bleeder screw and have someone rev the engine up to 2grand untill collant flows out with no air bubbles and tighten before letting off the gas.

also smoke from the back of the engine bay could be oilfilter housing leaking onto exhaust there is a gasket ring between it and the block that could be broken, i had that happen to me twice.

I just confirmed that the thermostat is good and that there is no air in the system. As for the the oil filter leaking, i have not noticed any drop in my oil level (dip stick) and if that was the case, they I assume i would be loosing oil. It's definetely comming from the back of the engine bay and the smoke is a sweet smell. I've confimed that none of the hoses are leaking, and in fact there are no leaks I can see anywhere...even on the ground.

Any other suggestions?

sweet smell i would assume to be coolant or tranny fluid burning and its probably falling onto the exhaust if it is burning that fast. i am stumped my friend, slide under the car and look, look and look some more.

thanks guys...I'm going to jack up the car on the lift this weekend and see if there isn't anything that's leaking that isn't making it to the ground...it maybe the oil cooler gasket, since I did change the actual oil pressure switch and oil pan gasket, but not the cooler gasket. The smoke comming out is a slight grey, blue color and smells "funny" not 100% certain it is sweet...

BTW, I did replace all the engine gaskets when I changed the timing belt, pump, etc...

Cheers and I'll let you know if i find anything

so after lifting up the car on the weekend and seeing some oil residue on the exhaust and other parts, I used a liberal amount o fcleaner to wipe everything down so i could see where the leak was actually comming from. Well after running the car for 2 minutes I saw a small oil leak appear just under the engine oil cooler. So I figure it must be O-ring, unless there is something above it which is leaking, although I doubt it...
