engine startup delay...

Hey, I’ve read a couple of other “hesitation threads here, but I have yet another version of hesitation of my car on startup.

First off, mine’s a 94 VTEC with close to 190k miles. The starter is original and the battery, hmm, don’t know, but it’s the 3rd battery I’ve put in there and it’s a genuine Honda battery. Sometimes (and it can be anytime, not just after a cold night or whatever), when I stick the key in the ignition and turn it, nothing happens. All the lights on the dash will come on, but the engine doesn’t start. It doesn’t even crank. Only after about a couple of seconds of delay does the engine start. So, its not an issue of the engine not cranking or having “difficulty cranking…its just that the engine starts after a short delay. Sometimes the delay is real short, sometimes it’s a little longer. One time, the delay lasted forever, meaning, it didn’t start at all. So, I turned the ignition off and started again, and the second time it started right up with no delay at all. So I have no idea what’s going on here. Anyone have any experience with this?

It could be a bad ground somewhere.
Either from the starter or the battery.
I just had to replace my negative ground wire from the battery on my 93' Si, because the wire was a little burnt.

Clean all the battery terminals. Do you hear a "clicking" noise when you turn the key?

Hey, I have the same exact problem and I think I figured it out...

When you have the key turned all the way and it doesn't do anything, keep it in place. Then, kinda let go of the clutch a little bit and it should start. I don't know why but ya gotta just let the clutch out a tiny tiny bit and it will work. Well, it did for me

Ignition Switch. It's common for the connections to break down, and can intimittently fail.

Mine does the same thing... I had a feeling it was the ignition switch... It hasn't done it for awhile though... if it gets bad again I'll just put a new switch in it.
