Engine dead

OK had a really bad week, first dented my hood, now this:

I was driving on the highway at about 70mph, then I hear a loud noise from the engine bay. When I accelerated the noise get's louder. I pulled over and took an exit, car was still driving but making the loud noise when I press the gas. Then I turn the car off. Park it for a while, then turned it back on, same thing, VERY loud noise when pressing the gas, even lightly. So I thought I could drive around and find a mechanic, well I was wrong, then engine eventually just stopped and I could no longer start the engine.

Does this sound like a broken timing belt?
Anways, this happened about 6 hours away from home so my car is in some small towm mechanic's shop in the boonies. They want to replace the whole engine saying it's my best bet. Do I really need a whole new engine?

A new engine would probably about the same price if you broke your t-belt and messed up the internals...A long block around 1200 from hmotoronline.com, I'd first find out whats wrong with it though.

Sounds to me like a spun bearing.

Time for a costly rebuild, or a new engine I'm afraid.
