EL Harness Issues: Signals and Dimmer

I swapped in my EL harness and gauges this evening. I have a 1993 Prelude with a 1994 dash harness, EL gauges, and the EL inverter. Last week when I installed my old 1993 gauges and harness, I had to hack the dimmer switch plug from the 1994 harness because the 1993 harness was missing one. I swapped it back over how it should've been when I was putting the 1994 harness back in.

Now I get these problems:

Gauges act like the dimmer switch isn't plugged in. I've triple checked the connections and they're on there right (although two wires are the same color, but I've tried them either way).

Also, the turn signals are goofy. When the headlights/parking lights are off, the turn signals work fine on the inside of the car and outside (I grounded the wire on the passenger side of the EL harness). When I turn the headlights on, the passenger blinker turns on and won't turn off. The signal staff on the steering column doesn't work at all with the headlights on.

I've checked everything that comes to mind during the swap. I've checked for possible harnesses that could've gotten yanked out when I was putting the EL harness back in. I ran out of daylight, so I quit for the night.

So, PO Gods, will you bless me with an answer?

So why did you have to cut the dimmer switch plug from the 94 harness to use it on the 93?

It has been a while since I did my conversion. You shouldn't be having any problems if you are using a 94 dash el harness, as long as you reconnected that dimmer connector. Just make sure that you don't have any shorts anywhere and all of your grounds are continuous.

With these types of problems, it seems that you have to try your best to trouble shoot on your own because they are so obscure.

I moved the dimmer plug to the 93 because it was missing. Not really sure why. It's been packed away for a long time, so who knows.

This is the second time I've done the conversion. It worked fine two weeks ago when I pulled it. I went back out and messed with it and everything seems to be continuous. Are the turn signals and headlights even wired in with that particular harness? Is it possible that maybe I yanked something out while I was feeding the dash harness to the fuse box?

The problem seems very odd and I've read every EL topic I can find on this site. Just hoping that someone can shine a little light on my problem.

I messed around with it this morning. All plugs are plugged in, the turn signal wire is grounded properly, and I see no stray wires. No combination of dimmer switch wires change anything. When I unplug the short gray plug on the lower driver side, the headlight problem stops, but the dash still won't light up.

Any thoughts?

Ugg...I feel really stupid now. Five wires on the dimmer plug. One of them is red w/white stripe, the other is red w/green stripe...I had them mixed up the whole time. I'm amazed that they were causing this much trouble, too.

Lesson learned: don't cut up your wiring harnesses.
