EL gauges and Odometer reading linked??

For those with EL gauges, is the odometer reading stored in the gauges or the ecu?? My friend is looking at a prelude and is concerned that maybe the dude swapped out gauges for one that showed a lower mileage...is this possible???

The mileage is stored in the gauges, I think in that controller box. It's possible that he could have done that.

yes it is possible they could have swapped the odo. All it is, is a chip that has it stored in its memory. It can be removed and replaced by opening the cluster.

Best way to check is carfax the car.

Sorry to be OT in your thread, but was there a definite answer if you could change the mileage on that chip to what the car currently has?

I don't know if there is a way you can actually change the mileage on the chip itself, I highly doubt it unless you have some kinda input device I guess...

But you can swap the chip out with another car...let's say you found in a junk yard with fewer miles...

Junkyard was an example...
You're going to have to cross your fingers and hope it has less miles then your car.

Or pull the vin, and check.

OT (sort of): my odom blinks at 121799, could that be b/c the chip has gone bad? Is there anyway I could gather my true mileage w.o sending it off somewhere?

Theresa,

I'd just recommend taking it to honda, does it go past 121799? Or is it just stuck?

It just blinks at 121799, it has since I bought the car. Both trips work though. Honda wants $80 just to LOOK at it.

Thanks for the responses....btw, reason i asked was because i know someone that used to work in the parts dept at Honda and told me that they sold alot of newer Accord gauge clusters because people knew that they could lower the mileage on their car before they sold it...

I hate to thread dig, but I'd rather do that than start a new one.

If you take a gauge cluster to Honda, can they change the mileage for you? I've read of people doing this with the 01+ RSX gauges. The 93 Si I'm looking at has old school gauges and if I get it and do the EL conversion, I'd want the mileage pretty close to his (172,3xx).

Honda can't change the mileage on the Prelude cluster. You just have to find gauges that have it's mileage recorded for you(like on ebay they usually tell you how many miles are on the gauges), or just hope for the best with junkyard.

You know the little screen that read your ODO, thats the chip itself as you can remove it and swap in a new one.

Wouldn't it just be easier to swap the whole cluster?

when i did my el cluster swap i went to honda to ask if i can have the odo match my orig cluster. All honda could offer me was a sticker they can put in the door jam stating the mileage of the car before the cluster swap..
