EGR Valve Issue

So my check engine light is on. I pulled the code and it was a code 12, which is "EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION SYSTEM (EGR)." I was wondering if that automatically means it's my EGR valve or is there something else in that system to go wrong and give me a code 12. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Honestly, I have no idea. I had the original work timing belt, oil pump, and a bearing replaced in December in the store in Massachusetts at the beginning of my winter vacation. I have only short local trips until February when I had to return to the University of Vermont. When the engine light is starting time back while I was driving the car and proceeded to overheat repeatedly. Whenever I managed to stop and kill the engine before it crossed the H profile, cool and fill the coolant.

What year is it? OBD1 only checks to see if the valve is connected and probably if it is getting vacuum - someone confirm this. OBD2 (96 only) checks for flow as well. Might be time for a new EGR valve

And why is this spambot still here?

Thanks a bunch! My car is OBDI. Sounds like I need a new EGR valve. Could this perhaps, be affecting my fuel economy? I have noticed that im getting around 22-24. Correct me if im wrong, but shouldnt a stock H23 be getting better than this?

Might want to check out the vacuum hose that goes to the EGR. Might be deteriorated somewhere and losing vacuum.

22 - 24 mpg is fine. Do you do a lot of highway driving?

How about just trying to clean your EGR Valve to see if it'll go away, won't hurt to clean it. Thing is, I cleaned mine not too long ago just to do it and it threw up a code on me after cleaning it and my idle went crazy. After you clean it just unplug the fuse for it for about 30sec and plug it back in and you should be good to go. Good luck

I checked all my lines and as far as I could see, they all looked healthy. If there are any leaks, they are smaller than i could find.

And yes, the majority of my driving is on the highway. The reason I asked is that I know a guy with a 93 Prelude Si stock and he was getting over 30.

oh and I have an EGR valve ready to be installed on it. I took one off of anothr Prelude and I cleaned it up. Got it looking nice and shiny in the ports. I gotta get a gasket from O'reily's and then I'll let you guys know if it fixes my problem.

Jw, but what fuse are you talking about? I am not aware of any fuses for the EGR valve.
