EGR Valve.. help

Okay for awhile now I have been getting on intermitent CEL code 12 from my 94 vtec lude with 145,000 miles on it./..

Every once in awhile I would take the EGR off and give it a good cleaning.. EVERY time I took it off, the bottom of the valve.. The part that bolts onto the engine was caked with black soot.. It was to the point that the little pressure switch?! that thing that looks like the end of a valve stem basically would not be able to be pushed down. I would clean it with some degreaser stuff PB Blaster to be exact.. and let it soak for a few min.. and presto, the little switch thing could be pushed in easuly with just one finger.. the diaphragm would move up and down and goody goody...

Reset the ECU and it would take about 3 weeks for it to throw the code again.. repeat above proces..

NOW however even the very day I clean it, the CEL code 12 light comes on.. SO I am thinking what now?? I want to replace ALL the little hoses that have anything to do with the EGR valve.. OR jsut take the EGR valve OFF all together.. IF I went the second route, what would be a good way to block off the opening created by not having the EGR valve installed?? also this is a 94 with obd-I so would unhooking the connections and completly removing the EGR valve cause the CEL to come on anyway??

Oh the car burns lots of oil.. about 1-1.5 quarts a week easy.. this is my guess as to what is causing the egr to stick so frequently...

If I were to replace all the little hoses.. how the heck am I supposed to know what length, diameter to get? I have a HELMS, but can;t find anything specifically addressing the hoses...

thanks.
andres

the hondata intake manifold heatshield gasket actually blocks off the EGR port on the head... maybe you could invest in one of those and kill two birds with one stone?

Andres, just block of your EGR valve. I was in your situation a while back. It's a PITA to keep taking it off and cleaning it only to do it again in a couple weeks. Take a piece of metal and cut it to fit on there and just block it off. You don't need to unplug the vacuum or connectors. I'll never have to worry about the code 12 light anymore

So what you are saying is to take off the EGR valve get some metal to cover the opening and then rebolt the EGR valve in place? Should I leave the ECU connecoter that goes into the EGR valve plugged in, and as for that SINGLE little hose that actuall attacked to the egr.. leave that attached, or cap it off?

Sorry for the late reply, I haven't been on for a couple days. Just leave connector and the vacuum home in and just stick a sheet of metal between the manifold and the EGR valve. Reset your ECM and you should never have a problem with code 12 again.
