egr code#12

I got a egr gode, and I'm thinking it's what is causing my irratic idle I have been talking about but I don't know, they both just happened at the same time, don't know how that would effect the idle, anyway did a search with some key words really didn't find much, question is this, what do you guys think the chances are of me just cleaning out this unit and it not throwing a code anymore, my cost on a new one is 130 bucks, so I would rather not spend that. I mean I'm gonna take it off and clean it, anyway just wondering if anybody else has done it with success.

Definately just clean it or block it off. Also make sure both bolts that hold it down are on snug. My idle was wacky because one was pretty loose.

If I block it off, will I still get the code?

If you are OBDI you wont get a code due to it, but it might not fix your problem.

Hey slp, do the coolant bypass mod. That totally fixed my idle. Seriously, my car has NEVER idled this good since i put in the JDM. I think i can even raise the idle back up if i want.

Im throwing a code also. Im pretty sure its an egr code. I have not checked it yet, but it happened right after disconnected the lines from the egr. It only pops up once in a while, 2 times in 4 days. And it clears itself when i shut off my car. I need to make a block off plate and get rid of it tho. I have an extra one in the garage but i just packed it up for moving. Just do the 2 mods and your idle may be better like mine.

Yeah my code only pops up once in a while too, but it popped up three times on the way home from the track the other day, so I was worried that it was something major. But I'm gonna clean it tonight and see what happens.

For OBDI you need to keep the vacuum lines and electrical connector plugged in, but you may block it. It can sense vacuum, but not flow. OBDII can sense flow so you cant just block off the OBDII EGRs.

Man Matt you don't even know I have 4 EGR's here all fairly new and well cleaned. I cannot clear this code. My whole car has been changed to ODB I also. I blocked it and it is still there. The voltage is right on also. I comes on and off while driving (wierd) but it refuses to leave me alone. I cleaned it really good and it stayed off for like a day, but guess who's back.

Yep mine just came back today, damnit!! It only seems to come on when I'm in low rpm 5th gear. It's very annoying. So You even blocked it off and your still getting the code? Did you leave the vacuum and the Plug connected? I might just go buy a new one, I cleaned the crap out of mine also, it looks brand new. ha ha Everytime I fix something on this car, something else goes wrong.

I say block it off and check the vacuum lines. All it can sense is that there is vacuum and that its plugged in I believe.

I'll try that next, thanks. Does that sensor effect smog emissions?

Yes, when you do emissions you will need to unblock it.

Ha, mine is sitting here at my desk. I was trying to make the block off plate but the metal i have is a little too thick for me to get thru with the limited tools i have here. So im going to try it again with some better tools.

The code does not seem to change anything. But if i did throw another code i wouldnt know i guess. I think im going to port this thing out for better flow. haha just kidding.

Hey guys,
I had the same exact problem with the infamous code 12 for the longest time. I checked all vacuum lines, cleaned my EGR and checked voltage, and my light still came on. So finally I bought a new EGR control solenoid valve from San Leandro Honda for like $75 and bingo, Problem Soved!! Code 12 refers to the entire EGR system so make sure to check this valve. It worked for me.
