EGR Blocked off CEL OBD-I

Okay here is the deal.. a while ago I had a random cel that when I checked was always 12.. Which is the EGR.. when this first happened I removed the EGR and cleaned all the carbon that was on it.. and the CEL went away for about two weeks or so.. I would clean it and put back etc, eventually even after JUST cleaning the EGR the CEL would STILL Come on... And yes I was reseting the ECU everytime...

So I figured what the hell.. its obd-I I'll just get a metal plate cut to fit over the EGR opening and bolt that down. WHat I did was put the plate down and then screwed the EGR valve back in place OVER it. I tried several different combinations I had the EGR plugged including the wiring harness and the vacuum tube, the CEL still came on. I tried it with the Harness unplugged and the tubing unplugged but capped with hose caps, both on the EGR and on the tubing itself. Still with the CEL.. THen I tried to have the Harness pluged in and the hose and egr capped.. and still the CEL..

How do I get rid of the Damn CEL?? I KNOW I have obd-I so what the hell is triggering the CEL..

As long as ALL you do is use the plate you were talking about, you will not throw a CEL. I've had it done for a while and have done it to many other cars with no problems at all. If you plug up the vacuum lines or unplug the connector, you will throw a CEL....all that is needed is the metal plate you were talking about.

The EGR lift sensor is most likely bad. That is why you still CEL. Best thing to do is replace the sensor. I'd go out to a junk yard and pull it off another engine or just get a newone.

Good luck,

Im guessing that this might help performance a tad... might have to block it off when I get the chance. How hard is it to make a block-off plate?

Extremely easy. Hymmm....would anyone here buy a "kit" to do the coolant bypass/egr blockoff? Meaning, a cnc'd piece of aluminum for block off the egr, a plate to replace the fast idle valve under the throttle body (since it is not needed after doing the coolant bypass), and a plate to cover the bottom of the electronic air control so the nipples for the coolant arent just hanging there? Having a "kit" like this would make the install very simple and keep the engine bay very clean looking while adding some dress-up with some billet aluminum or something.

If you are wondering what parts I'm talking about, look at these diagrams...

Piece below #18 in this picture... link

the egr blockoff plate has the same shape as #19 in this picture.... link

plate for replacing the fast idle valve would take place of all of #13 in this diagram... link

I would estimate the kit to cost maybe $15-20 shipped? Made of billet aluminum and would come with printed install instructions to make it easy to install. Let me know if this is something people would want and I'll see what I can do.

A new one costs about $150. I was about to get a new one, but $150 is too much for me.

Blocking it off is very easy. Remove the EGR valve from the manifold and place it over a sheet of metal and trace and cut. Then drill the holes to match it.

Andres, my EGR is blocked off and I did not trip the CEL. Maybe you can try cleaning it off again before you block it off, I dont know what difference that'll make though.

To anyone that has blocked off the EGR, don't forget to unblock it while doing your emissions test. I completely forgot to remove it and failed emissions .

Hmm Yeah this is weird.. I mean as of RIGHT NOW.. I have the EGR blocked off but the wiring harness and vacuum tube plugged into the EGR valve.. STILL get the cel..

From what people have said it appears that I should NOT get a CEL.. I don;t see what cleaning off the EGT would do considering it is blocked off anyhow.. Maybe their is a short in the wiriing harness that goes to the EGR?? Or maybe I should replace the vacuum hoses that are associated with the EGR functioning?? I dunno I mean I know its not hurting anything, but having that stupid CEL light on all the time is Weak..

time to make a trip to the junkyard. I bet you could get an EGR there for $5.
