Dropping Transmission...

I'm in the process of doing this. I've only taken out the battery and everything covering the bottom of the car. Do I have to remove the bumper too? What else would have to come off....could someone please let me know everything that's neccesary to remove in order to drop it. My clutch is screwed up and I'd like to have a better idea of what I'm lookin at......I know it's alot of work. I've been pretty much studying the Chilton book....but it's a little vague and doesn't really help as much as I'd like........thanx....I'd appreciate any help

looking down into your hood from the top...
there is a mount that connects teh tranny to the frame... it has to come off.
make sure you disconnect all the hoses and lines going into the trans.
drain the fluid before you drop it.
remove the undercover from the bottom.
remove center beam.
remove passenger side axle from the tranny side only.

just remove anything that is coming in the way. like the battery and the plates that it sits on, intake, etc...

i'm not too sure if the downpipe has to be removed.

this is all i can think of at the moement. make sure you have someone to help you. it's a pretty tough job if you're doing it for the first time.

on the front of the tranny... it has a metal tube running to it and a plunger-like thing on it

here's a pic, looking from the top down (its the black cylinder thing, the newest looking part in that picture, lol):

Nice....I'm just trying to get it out now so I can put some type of stock clutch or something for now thats not too bad....just to get me through the winter. I'm getting a new clutch for the summer but don't know what flywheel yet. Fidanza seems to be everyones favorite....I'm still gonna do a lil research though.....and see what comes up!

BTW thanx for the pic G_Loc...helped alot!

clutch damper is a small cylindrical shaped unit. it should be on the passenger side. there is one line going into it from the master cylinder (?) and one line coming out of it going to the clutch hose. it's pretty small and may be hard to see.

so just follow the clutch hose away from the tranny, and it'll lead you to the clutch damper. don't mess with it if you don't have to... that thing is very hard to handle... i speak from experience.

don't remove the clutch damper or disconnect the hydraulic line going to the slave cylinder... i zip tied mine out of the way and left the line attached...

here's what your engine bay should look like when its out:

GM Syncromesh

is gm syncromesh really that much better than Honda MTF? I was going to put Honda MTF in after finishing up my clutch but now I'm not so sure. I don't want to use something that will kill my trans. Especially from an inferior auto maker .

Everyone who has this stuff seems to like it. Mainly the 5th gen people. Anyone 4th gen use this stuff....how is it?

if you're not having any issues with your tranny, just stick with genuine honda MTF, u can't go wrong.

ppl use GM synchromesh cuz it seems to fix their grinding problems.

Broken Slave Cylinder Boot

The boot on my slave cylinder was broken before I even touched it. Inside the cylinder seems to be full of isht! Could this have been what caused damage to my clutch?

Anyways...what I really want to know is if it's expensive to replace this. I've heard they go for about $120. Anyone know where I can get cheap.......refurbished even?

Oh, and one more thing. Do I have to take out the lower ball joint on the drivers side? The Chilton book says to remove the ball joint but is not clear on whether I should remove them both.

I just took time off on the weekend from working on the car started working on it again today. Hopefully I can get it done soon.

what was wrong with your car anyways?

A slave cylinder costs like $20 from Autozone... maybe a bit less. That may have been your problem all along

as for the ball joints... i didn't remove mine. Granted, it was harder to remove the axles without separating them, but they're still removable.

my clutch is screwed up.....I was driving hard a while back and slipped up. something came loose in the clutch cuz everytime I drive it sounds like there is something bouncing around in there. I'm just gonna change the clutch anyway.

Good to know that's not too much.

I took off pretty much everything that I had to take off and lowered the trans already. I just can't get it off. I took off all of the screws that are around it......tried pulling it off....even banged it a few times with a rubber hammer....and nothing. Can anyone help me out?

You probably missed a bolt somewhere. Count the number of bolt that hold the transmission to the engine if the Chiltons books shows it (in a diagram), then count those bolts on the block. You should know immediately if you did. This happened to my brother and I when we took his transmission out last week.

same thing happened to me too...

if they're all off, try to place a wooden block in a strategic location to help you hit the tranny outwards with a hammer
