Dremal Time!! Custom porting/ polishing.

Have any of you guys ever took a rotary tool, somthing like a dremmal and tried to port/polish your throtle bod or intake manifold. Feel any results. I think it could be good if you got a quailty bit and took off allot of area. Thanks

i dont suggest using a dremel on anything that affects your motor's respiratory system. you cant get anything perfect with one, you'll get a hammered like finish, and that cant be good for velocity.

you might want to try to get a wire brush wheel and a small buffing wheel for that tool(sorry i dont know what its called) for an air compressor, you wont take out any metal but you would just polish what you have, like i said i dont suggest you try to port anything without the proper machinery.

If you take off any metal inside your throttle body or intake manifold, air is going to get by it quiker, thats just common since but the question is how would one take off, and if doing it would be a waste of time or a great achievment.

Alot of science goes into porting heads, if it was something that Billy the Hillbilly could do in his barn, companies wouldn't charge hundreds of dollars to do it. You can't just start grinding away at metal, there are certain shapes and angles that are there for a reason. Unless you have forced induction or high compression and cams, there is no reason to even attempt porting anything on your car.

From what I gather by reading your posts, I am willing to bet that you would lose HP rather than gain it if you took that Dremel anywhere near your engine.

If you want to learn to port and polish your own stuff you will need a professional Die Grinder, an assortment of grinding heads, and an air compressor to power it. Do alot of research, and go to the junkyard to pick up some parts to practice on.

factory finish is really rough... to polish intake manifold Use sand paper get it to a smooth finish you must do it by hand. also u can use a dremel tool to port match the butterfly plate on the intake manifold. use sand paper to smooth out the intake and exhaust ports on your head.

do not take away too much material if u want to port your head u will need to bring it to a place with a flowbench. u might loose hp if u just start porting out without testing air flow.

I bought another stock intake manifold just to mess around with and I'm currently p&p'ing the top half (with a dremel), but the lower half is a prob to get to with the dremel bec its so tight. I have about 4 hrs of work into the job and only have 4 of the 8 holes done. I'm reshaping the separating metal and making the holes bigger. Then I'll mix and match to see which combo works best. I know the dremel and my lack of an engineering background isn't the best for the job, but if it works out to be better than stock I'd like to say that it was my work rather than work I paid for. I'll keep ya posted, but it will be a long while
