I was just wondering what exactly the cat does and how an aftermarket one will improve performance. Is it worth the price? Someone please explain all this to me

Cat is short for catalytic converter. A catalyst is something that is not a reactant or product of a chemical reaction but speeds up a reaction. The "cat" on your car uses special metals to do this and cut your emmisions by huge amounts with virtually no downsides. The one minor drawback as that the exhaust gas flow is slightly hindered by passing though. If you get a high flow cat you might not be able to still pass smog(area dependent) and you might gain a horsepower.

Yeah, seems like a waste of money. I know this guy with a 3rg gen Integra with no catalytic converter! When I heard how much it inproved his performance, I wanted to find out exactly what it did.

i got a pacesetter high flow cat

i put a pacesetter high flow cat on my 93 si not to long ago and i notice a little difference. the old was totally trashed though so that could be why. i put it on cuz i was failing emissions and needed a new cat and i past with it. pacesetter was $140, a little cheaper.

I don't know about in Cali, you would fail visual inspection. Also a gutted cat hurts performance anyway buy usally causing more problems in the exhaust flow by not being as smooth.

I have that cat on my car, and I love it. It made it sound better. It also helped a bit in performance. I noticed a small gain.

Actually, a catalyst is BOTH a product AND a reactant. The catalyst is consumed by the reaction, and then re-formed.

Catalyst means a substance that, when ADDED to a reaction mixture, changes (speeds up) the rate of attainment of equilibrum in the system without itself undergoing a permanent chemical change.
