Dead-Spot between 2500-3000 RPM - HELP!

Hi Guys,

Bought my '92 Si Vtec a couple of weeks ago. It was running fine until a few days ago, when it suddenly developed this strange problem. When the revs get to 2500 the engine appers to lose vasts amounts of power, until it moves to the 3000+ range! It's not 'stuttering' or jerking but the power lose is very apperant, and annoying. I've topped up the oil and put in some of that Fuel Injector cleaner fluid into a tank of petrol but the problem still persists. If even reset the ECU but it didn't make any difference. I was told that the ECU can give out error codes but I've no idea how to view them, any ideas??

Thanks for any assistance!

K.

When the ECU gives out error codes, your check engine light will turn on... so... if you dont have that little amber annoying light coming on you probably don't have any error codes to speak of. As for making some more mid-range torque... I'm sure some people on here have some ideas....

Judging that he said "petrol" and not gas or gasoline, he is probably overseas where VTEC models were produced in 92.

As for your question, I'm not sure why you are loosing low end power. Maybe it needs a tune-up or the catalytic converter needs to be replaced. there are many possible reasons.

well the easiest way to find out if it is a VTEC is look at the damn engine code on the block instead of reading some sticker

dont get off-topic about if the car is vtec or not...either help the guy or dont worry about if he has vtec or not...
as for your problem...i would suggest having a tune-up done to it...and find out what needs to be replace....

I'd replace the distributor cap and rotor. If your plugs and wires look old/worn out, them too. I used to experience the same thing. Its gone now. Sometimes I get hesitation though.

Why don't you take it easy and relax smartguy. Maybe if you saw that he's from Ireland and not North America you would know that they did make 92 preludes with VTEC motors overseas. And a sticker inside the door jam is enough proof. Hold your breath next time or reword your response so we can keep this board the way it has been for the last year and a half.

As for your problem, check your plugs, wires, cap, and rotor and change your fuel filter and check your timing as well. It seems a lot of VTEC preludes have this problem. If you do a search you will come up with many threads.

I know comments have already been made. But it will definately always amaze me how some people just jump at the chance to make themselves look so ignorant!! Sorry to get off the topic. WELcome to the site lespaul. Good luck with your hesitation issue. I would have to agree with the tune up. Eliminate the small possibilities first.

A quick note to say thanks very much to all the people that offered their invaluable advise. I will book the car into a garage for a general tune-up / service this week. I wish that I could do the work myself but I’m not at all mechanically minded, hence the reason Forums like this are such a necessity to help my kind diagnose problems so the garages can’t rip us off. Incidentally, I was amazed to read the comments some people made regarding the authenticity of the car, and whether it was a VTEC or not. I made the comment about the “sticker as a joke (although it does actually exist). Yes, I may be a simple Paddy from Ireland but we do actually have Preludes over here and some of them are even VTEC……….…..AND 1992 registered!!!

Thanks again.

Welcome aboard Lespaul. pay no attention to the flamers, it's generally very good natured and helpful on here.

I had the same problem last summer with my 95 VTEC (I have that sticker inside the door too!!). I changed the plugs, HT leads and distributor and it's been fine. I'd also recommend changing the air filter for a K&N one so the engine can breathe easier, since doing that acceleration has been noticably smoother right across the range.
The best part is you can do all this yourself in a day, you feel better knowing you did the work yourself and you get to know your engine better too.

good luck

I'm going to warn everyone on this thread that has made an ignorant comment. Watch what you say, think before you type, and lets not start a flame war over whether the guy has a 92 Vtec or not. He most likely does seeing as how it's already been stated, they were made overseas in 92. If you can't control your mouth then I am sure that we can ask you nicely to not bother returning here. We like to keep this place just the way it is.

Lespaul: Welcome to the board, and don't let the ignorant comments of a few people keep you from returning. Enjoy.

Have you missed a shift or over-revved the motor recently? I let a friend drive my car last night, he went from redline in 3rd to 2nd. This would put the car at around 10k rpm. I have a few bent valves and I have a dead spot between 3 and 4k.
