Dash...

Alright i have a really odd question about the 4th Gen dash. Ok, on the 92-93 'Lude, the speedometer and tachometer are plainly visible, and only light up during the night. However, on the 94-96, the speedo and tach light up very similar to all of the other guages. It is dark until you turn the key...i hope i am beeing clear enough.

So my question is...is it possible to swap that section of the dash from a 94-96 to a 92-93? I love the look of the 94+ but i dont see the point of buying a car just for the dash board. I am curious if you can swap the two? Anyone ever done it? Ever seen it? Thanks... if i am beeing unclear let me know i will try to specify better. Thanks again.

I know what you are trying to say. The 94-96 4th gens have the electroeluminescent speedo and tach which matches the temp and gas gauges.

I'm not sure if people have swapped it on this board, but I know it is possible to swap as long as you have all the right parts. People on other boards have done it.

OK thanks Mark94. Do you know if it's possible to just sortof cover up the speedo and tach to look like the 94's...or do you have to get an entire new peice? Thanks.

The whole assembly needs to be replaced. I think the electroeluminescent gauges have some sort of power assembly that you will need in order to make it work properly.

I beleive that 93Si4ws (Vern) was looking to do the conversion and he probably has the information you need. Send him a PM.

There is a lot more involved in the conversion than just placing a new cover over the gauges.

i THINK there is something to do with ECU also. The 94+'s have a digital odometer (i think) and the milage is stored in the ECU. could be wrong. Do a search. . .this comes up WEEKLY!! also, try www.hondaprelude.com

the way to do the swap is to get the electro-luminscent gauges, there's a power supply that sits on the driver tweeter, and the entire wiring harness behind the dash board .(including the fuse box). Then the rest will just bolt right on. Do not get the wiring harness cut, or it'll be a ***** to put in.

Good Luck.... i'm still trying to find gauges someone wants to sell plus the entire wiring harness. (no you don't need the ecu)

did the swap

did the swap to an EL gauge from the normal... have a 95 S prelude so it was not the EL ones... man it was a pain... well worth it. the odometer change millage so the ecu does not store the miles. and yes the odometer is digital now! YAY .. oh and the EL's come with two trip meters ..TRIP A .. TRIP B... just incase u wanna see distances..

Installing was ok just needed to look at the wire diagrams alot.. problem was i didn't have the wire harness so i made my own... trust me it wasn't fun. wat you really need are just the gauge cluster and the EL controller thing..(the one in the tweeter side)

WELL WORTH IT THO!

Swapping the electroluminesent gauge has been FAQed....All the info you could want is there. If that's not good enough, buy a 1996 electrical manual from helms. It has the wiring diagrams for electro and non electro gauges there. You can figure out how to do the whole swap that way. That's how I did mine. And you don't have to do anything with the ECU.
