Custom Catback vs. Name brand catback

Whats the difference? Would the piping of a Greddy or Thermal produce better performance than custom piping? (We are talking 2.5 inches in width) Also, has anyone heard of the company Power1 (yeah I know its a fart can). I bought a temporary muffler of this type because well i needed a muffler by Saturday and also because I am poor. I plan on getting a Thermal muffler soon. When I do get this, will it, combined with the custom piping, perform the same as if I used the Therman muffler with the Thermal piping they include in the catback package? One more Q, anyone have any idea how this muffler will sound (AEM cai and custom 2.5 inch piping)? I really hope it doesn't sound like a damn bumble bee, but its all I can do right now. Thanks in advance.

It all depends on the style of bending, what route you take, and the size of the pipe. If you can find a shop that can mandrel bend pipe... it should perform just as good. Crush bending on the other hand makes the piping a smaller diameter at the bends which results in backpressure. If you can find a picture of what the piping looks like for the Thermal exhaust... they should be able to bend it the same way. They most likely won't be able to bend stainless though. So you will have to go with aluminized... nothing wrong with that though. Good luck

I did 2.5 custom with magnaflow muffler and it was OBNOXIOUSLY loud. Unbearable from 2500-3200rpm. It did not however sound like a bumble bee as you put it. This was with intake, header, and cat already replaced. It got a major boost at approximately 4200 that felt like VTEC! Very cool. I finally added a no-namer resonator because I couldn't stand the noise. I felt no difference in the power surge but the sound is great!

I think most aftermarket exhausts are 2.25". If I were you I'd just save up a little longer and get the full thermal system. You get a full stainless steel exhaust that is mandrel bent.

For experience, most custom exhausts sound like crap. I'm not saying EVERY custom set up is like this, rather I say this just from the ones I have heard. If you can find a reputable shop to bend you a nice mandrel exhaust, go for it, but it will be around the same price as an aftermarket exhaust.

i had a custom exhaust...2.5 mandel bent with a ractive muffler and it was LOUD, i just upgraded to a greddy sp catback and it is completely different...i can almost say its pretty quite now...i know the ractive muffler helped in the loud exhaust but from my experience i would save and get the thermal if i were you

its because when you guys get custom piping you dont get a resonator, if you did custom piping with a resonator it would basically sound the same with the same power. I have the full thermal catback, however, the weld on the axle back part of my thermal to the flange actually had a hole in it, i noticed it one day when i was looking under my car and there was alittle carbon build up on the outside of the piping. I contacted them and they told me to send it back, but i just used a little jb weld and its fine.

I am saving up for the thermal. I got the custom 2.5 with the generic Power1 muffler and it sounds good and its very loud. It sets off car alarms, even when I'm not in a parking garage . Plus i do get that surge of power that CA92ludew spoke of at around 4000rpms...only it seems im getting more power everywhere. Click on the link in my sig if u wanna hear it.

damn dude, that's a crazy nice deal.

Does your shop have a mandrel bend machine or did they weld pieces together?

Just a question, why 2.5"?

I paid $130 for mine... mandrel bend...

2.5 for power. I did a lot of research before deciding to do mine and I found some dyno plots and the same size engine that indicated a decent power surge as compared to 2.25....

With a decent pre made exhaust your gauranteed some sort of power gain, but with custom you might gain or lose power.

I'd be interested in seeing these dyno plots for 2.5" exhausts. If you could give me a link I'd appreciate it. Just wondering because it seems like every aftermarket company uses 2.25".
