Does it not stay shut or something, if so mine did that but I just removed the spring and it works perfectly fine.

This is one that I picked up out of a junkyard. The spring that opens the lid works fine, but the little metal clip that holds it shut is broken (so it always stays open). It's black and in fairly good shape. . .free to a good home, you pay shipping.

i dont think mine has a spring to open it. if i push where it says "push" it would be me just pushing down against the rubber piece. i have to puch towards the back of the cupholder to open it.

how much would shipping be to NJ?

If I push this one closed, it opens right back up again. Is the little wire clip on yours still OK (the thing that holds it closed)? In the last pic I posted above, it mounts where that shiny metal tab is. If yours is fine, you can just switch it over to this one. It's really light and small. . .shipping couldn't be more than $5. Let me know if you are interested. . .I'm just using it as a pencil cup for the time being!

i dont notice a wire clip in that picture. my cupholder looks just like that last picture. the shiny metal tab appears to be functionless on mine. it does nothing. mine definately does not spring up.. i think there is no spring. heh. the only thing that moves it open/closed are the gears on the other side.

There are two things that make the cupholder work:
1) there is a wound spring that is on the axel of the hinge (not visable in the 3 previous pictures It constantly tries to keep the lid open.
2) There is a small metal clip that HOLDS the lid closed (against the tension of the spring). It looks like a part of a paper clip. The end of the clip locks into the curved track on the lid. in the image above, it is missing. . .it only MOUNTS where that shiny bracket is. Below is a picture of what it would look like with the clip i place (clip is in blue):
