Crazy Temperature Gauge

So I was driving down the I-5 for about 7 minutes, and I glanced down at my gauges only to notice that my temp gauge was almost in the red...so naturally I quickly pulled over. as I came to a stop the bars began to dissapear within a matter of seconds. I hadnt even been driving long enough for the car to be hot. Why would it have gotten so hot so quick, and then went back down?? please help. thanks in advance

I don't know what is wrong but my prelude did that when I first bought it. I just pulled off the battery for a few seconds and replaced my Thermostat and it went away. I was scared at first but the problem never came back afterwords.
