crank shaft pulley...out

last night my lights dimmed for a sec while i was driving, then the battery light came on, and so did the abs...so i pulled over...i noticed that my power steering and alternator belts where loose. I thought they had snapped, but turns out, they didnt. I pulled em right out with no effort. they are still in greate shape. I had to get home, which was not far, so i drove back with no alternator charging and no power steering, optima bat held on good, but it was a risk to take, cause the motor coulda have gone anytime.... Today, I took it to the shop, and took a look under there. Turns out my crankshaft pulley is gone. I m guessing this is just due to ware, and time...cause i dont push my car very hard at all... I left the pulley at the shop so i didnt take pics but i will 2morrow...but all the teeth on it were gone, and it only took a turn with the ratchet, and it fell off. Got lucky otherwise my motor would have gone to flames. goin to get a new pulley from honda 2morrow and the bolt that goes with it...I read from ntpog that going with an aftermarket crank pulley has sideeffects in the long run. Has anyone else ever tried anything aftermarket ? if not thats ok...but as an advice...all you 4th gen people, you should think about checkin your crank pulley...i got lucky so i m passing it on. my car is a 93 Si...and well maintained, so ifyour car is about that age or close...watch out for it.

my car is about 174000 miles on it...nothin shady on that part of the motor...the car was bone stock when i baught it...and it was well maintained...Never had any issues besides normal stuff like t belt, valve adj, clutch..., engine mods are i/h/e, msd, and pulleys.thats about all i ve done to it maintenance wise for the past 3 years...i m gonna get the valves rechecked...they were fine a year ago when i did the Tbelt but since i drove about 20 miles with no belts...needs to be rechecked, i hope nothin happened cause my motor is strong.

Heres another article my friend sent me.

"If the RPM remains at or near one of the major criticals for any length of time, fatigue failure of the crankshaft is probable. Major critical RPM’s are dangerous, and either must be avoided or properly damped. Additionally, smaller but still serious problems can result from an undamped crankshaft. The oscillation of the crankshaft at a major critical speed will commonly sheer the front crank pulley and the flywheel from the crankshaft. I have witnessed front pulley hub keys being sheered, flywheels coming loose, and clutch covers coming apart. These failures have often required crankshaft and/or gearbox replacement. "

Well, that's good to know, I guess, except that you said you don't drive it hard, so I highly doubt this failure was due to that. This sounds like just a one-in-a-million freak metallurgical accident. I've heard of stuff like the crankshaft or the driveshaft just splitting in fairly new cars. I drove my F22A like hell when I owned it and it loved me for it, and I don't think this will make go any easier on my H23, although I don't (and won't) sit at 6k for minutes on end.

The article said something about dampers. I don't know how the damping mechanism works, but I know that most aftermarket pulleys are problematic because they don't have dampers. Maybe somehow your damper mechanism wore out with age? Or did you have an aftermarket crank pulley?

Oh well. The upside is, when something like this happens and you get it fixed, you know you're good to go for the next 174,000 miles!

I had my crankshaft pulley break too - turned out it was caused by my AC compressor locking up. You may wanna check and be sure it is still spinning too. Sorry for the bad luck...

my AC compressor seems fine, my AC is always ice cold...anyway car is back from the shop, the crank pulley cost 163 from honda, the bolt was 14 bucks, and the key that goes with it was 5 bucks, for a total for 190 after tax...car runs like a charm now, somehow some vibrations i noticed a few weeks ago from the steering wheel disapeared....oh well i guess it was needed. i ll post pics of the broken pulley 2morrow

That's interesting, what did the vibration feel like? Related to RPM, etc?

no it was always smooth...i never had until about a 3 weeks ago it was coming from the front driver side...the steering wheel started gently shacking at about 45 or 50...but it was really light...now its gone...beats me, i thought my wheels needed balance, but everything is all smooth now...so i dont know hehe.
