A couple of oil related questions...

What oil filter should I use? What synth. and what reg. oil has the best $/perform. ratio? I need an oil change soon and I'm not sure which way to go.

Sorry for all the abbreviations, there's something wrong with this server and my DSL that doesn't allow me to post much more than one line of text...

if you dont already use synthetic in your car dont switch to it, it will cause you problems (start to leak). not in all cases but i have seen some bad leaks from people doing this.

Why would it matter if I switch or not? My friend in his integra just switched to synthetic... we'll see how it turns out.

from what i understand the synthetic will eventually seep through where conventional oil has left deposits and so forth, basically the synthetic is a very good oil and cleans the engine very well but in a engine that has not used synthetic oil there are places around seals that have more or less been sealed the synthetic oil washes away the deposit and in turn opens up the hole. hope you understand this been up for 48 hours straight

DLF is correct, if you have more than 50,000 miles on the car you should normally just stick with conventional oil.

If you or the previous owner has used conventional the entire life of the car, the seals have been conditioned and set with this oil (you have to remember that conventional is more dense than synthetic). Because the sythetic is thinner, it can easily bypass these seals which have been used to thicker oil.

When I bought my car, I had 66,000 miles on it, therefore, I couldn't switch to synthetic, but I did the next best thing. I started to use a synthetic blend and have had no oil leaking problems since (knocking on wood).

I would definitely suggest a blend if you definitely want to switch from conventional. Mobil and Valvoline make a good blend.

Good Luck

Mark

don't think so, i am the second owner of the lude, i switched to syn when the car was 60k miles, my car is 90k miles now, running fine, no leaking problem

if oil leak, should be the oil pan itself, but not because of oil you're using

BTW, haven't got your quesiton yet, i use OEM honda filter, (IMO, if Honda filter can't fit the best, no one else can) and Mobil1 tri-syn

but recently i got some info that both Mobil 1 and Castrol syn oil are not pure syn anymore, they mixed in some other kind of substance, if they are not pure syn, no point for me to pay them $4/qt, i am still in search for a replacement, maybe redline ($5/qt)

As previously mentioned by DLF, leaks CAN occur, but not in all cases.

I would rather be safe than sorry, therefore I decided to use a blend rather than chance developing a leak IN THE FUTURE. You won't see a leak immediately.

It sounds like you are one of the fortunate people who have switched and are safe................FOR NOW

Mark

I would say it depends on how many miles you have on your car. I switched to synthetic after 60k miles and no leaks here. Even if it did leak, change the seals and run synthetic from then on.

i had a friend that switched to synthetic oil and it took all of 5 days and he was leaving puddles everywhere.

if you think it will work by all means do it, but after its done and if it does leak you cant go back to conv. oil and hope it will stop

I think this was refering to the synthetic blend. Now the blend is more conventional oil less sythetic.

because by then the seals have been opened up and the oil will continue to leak probably not as fast as the synthetic but still leak just the same
