converting my *** 4th gen sunroof to a 5th gen glass...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ok, im sick and tired of my stupid ass metal sunroof, second one and its rusted through again..now ive seen the 5th gen roof put into the 4th gen and vise versa...some shimming invovled ect, but evryone says you cant keep the slide that covers the inside of the panel..but i got the entire assembly, the sunroof frame slide everything also has the drains motor ect...so my question is, why cant i modify the bolt point as i would to simply put the 5th gen glass piece on my 4th gen brackets..this way i can install the whole assembly slide and all, ive seen this swap done a few times and people complain about not being able to find something to cover thiers with, im wondering if they didnt get the whole assembly and just got the glass....ill be putting this in my 4th gen very soon, btw i got the ENTIRE assembly for 80 bucks, motor rails complete bracket panel everything...so hopefull ill be able to keep the slide if not, the glass still looks 100x better than that piece of a rusted crud ball that i had on there, and it wont ever rust again..it glorious

The thickness of the 5th gen unit is substantially more than the 4th gen one (because of the sliding sunshade. Good luck getting it to fit under the OEM headliner.

You can't use the sliding sun shade in a 4th gen lude. The sliding sun shade slides directly into the roof. One reason why 4th gen preludes don't have a moon roof is becuase the roof is too small. So if you were to use the 5th gen glass, you would not be able to use the sliding cover. The 5th gens are putting 4th gen sun-roofs in. There's a write up about it. 4th Gen Sunroof Panel in 5th Gen Sunroof

So im guessing if a 5th gen can use a 4th gen roof lid, then a 4th can use the glass as well.

4th Gen roof is far smaller than the 5th. I've compared both, and don't think you will be successful.

Maybe you wont be able to slide the shade all the way open ... but keep i mind the light is right behind the sunroof so some creativity may be needed...

Best of luck, take lots of pictures for us!

for everyone who said it couldnt be done..lol...no problem, got the assembly in, even swapping in the new motor..my old rails need to be lubed up with a silicate, but the roof fits flush, slight shimming was needed, and im modifying the sliding cover to fit, it wasnt that hard just had to use my brain a tad bit ,the slide will cover like 1/3 of the opening, but it almost did that in the 5th gen, because the handle has to stay accesible....anywho...when i bolted it in stock, it sat about 1/4 " to high, its super easy to shim thoughi also swapped out the brackets that hold the glass in place ..i was going to modify the 5th gen sunroof mounting bracket itself so i could use the slider stock, but no biggie....i found by swapping out the bracket from the 5th gen to my 4th gen roof assembly i didnt have to modify the mounting flange at all to bolt the roof right off, and my headliner fits perfectly, now im going to also be painting my A-pillar and headliner black with the interior coating spray to match the rest of the black.....and BTW to Red92S you said you had a problem covering the bolts, on a 5th gen there a black trim piece that screws onto the glass that hides the mounting bolts, so even w/o the liner in my car it all looks clean, no visible metal really, and no bolts whatsoever..no cutting or trimming nothing..i couldnt take pics as i was doing it, it was an emergency swap since im about to recieve in excess of twelve to twenty inches of rain this weekend from the hurrincane...looks tremendously better, and the glass only wieghs about twice what the metal piece does, im talking about just the piece not the assembly

no, the cover slides above the domelight, but my piece was cut when i got my 5th gen assembly, so closed it looks crappy on the back, im going to make one...but even without it, it looks ok to me, no real metal is showing and no bolts are exposed at all
