computer related problem? distributor? help?

okay first of all, i replaced my distributor last year after experiencing SOME of the similar problems i'm having today. i went with an aftermarket setup in order to cut costs.

the symptoms:

1.) car fires, idles, and runs fine for a bit.
2.) while driving, the tachometer does some erratic behavior (jumping from 1k to 8k) while actual engine revs stay constant.
3.) as the car warms up (it seems) then it eventually shuts down and will not restart. after continuous attempts to start the engine, then the ecu trips a code.
4.) if the car is warm and i attempt to engage vtec whatsoever then it immediately dies.
5.) after the car cools down (or ecu resets) really not sure then the car eventually fires back up for a while then eventually dies again.

does anyone have any idea what's going wrong here? i'm thinking ecu but i really don't know anything about computers.

any input is appreciated.

thanks in advance

the hot/cold issue sounds like the main relay. i'm not sure about the way it's driving w/ the VTEC and what not, but i'd search/read a little about the main relay and see if that all matches up.

thanks for the help. i'm going to feel really relieved/dumb if that's the issue.

Also look into the ICM. This is generally the cause of erratic RPM jumps. It could also cause the car not to engage VTEC.
