Compression test on engine alone?

Can you do a compression test on an engine when it's out of the car? If not, how do those "wholesale" distributors conduct such a test when all of their engines are shipped in crates? Just wondering...

Sure you can do it while its out of the car, I doubt the engine will notice, .

You do it the same way, just gotta keep the TB open, and crank the engine using the starter. Just hook it up to a battery, and your set!
