Code 17 - 93 prelude vtec 5spd

I have a code 17 (VSS). I was wondering if this will do the trick?

eBay Motors: HONDA PRELUDE SPEED SENSOR 93 94 95 96 97 98 99 00 01 (item 140206591973 end time Feb-18-08 11:51:18 PST)

Couple months ago, the speedometer would go out sometimes (maybe 5-10%) of the time and its been like that to this day. Some days it won't mess up at all. Also vtec won't engage when the speedometer goes out (something about the computer must be getting info that the car is going...I believe 17mph...to engage). Also the odometer started acting up about the day I go it about 8 months ago and after having it about 3 months, the odometer went out.

Also was wondering...how much power does the ps rob from the car and what does a 93 prelude feel like w/o power steering?

You won't be able to engage vtec with a nonfunctioning vss. Any car w/o power steering feels like ****. If you've ever driven like one of those mini gokarts around a track and trying to turn, that's kinda what it feels like.

I wouldn't buy that thing from ebay imo, it looks weird. There's supposed to be a harness coming from it or spot for a harness to plug into, I don't remember, but you can't see it in the pictures .. Just buy the oem VSS to be sure:

i was just asking about the ps because i used to have a crx w/ a b18c1 and ls tranny that had no ps and that was fine

isn't that what is right in the middle where the harness plugs into?

and i thought you had to buy the whole thing (vss w/ the gear shaft) when you buy it oem (atleast new)...am I wrong?

Well you don't know if it's the sensor or the actual unit with the harness throwing the code. You'd have to take out the entire unit anyway to replace just the sensor, so why not just replace the entire unit to be on the safe side. I suppose you could just try to take off the sensor, but it's a pain in the ass to work around in that area without taking out the entire unit. 2 bolts vs 3 screws and theres also a harness clip.

I haven't changed it for years, but just look at it and see the work area you have and decide. It's all the way behind the block on top of the tranny housing. Almost right below the intake manifold. If it were my I'd just replace the entire unit anyway and have piece of mind knowing it's oem

If I was you I would just replace the entire thing because a lot of 4g owners have issues with their vss going bad. It would suck if you replaced one part of it and then the other part went bad 3k miles later or something.
