Clutch ?`s

how can you tell if your clutch is about to die? Mine does not feel as "springy" as the other 4th gens i have driven. It`s sort of stiff, and does not push in as much as a normal clutch (has less play) can this be fixed by replacing the clutch fluid?

Peace,

Flush or bleed your clutch hydraulics before you do anything else. Usually, if you fluid is old or you clutch has been beaten on, it'll be less "springy" and doesn't grip very well. Also, you will have a slightly higher engagement point. Does this relate to you? I'm not too sure about it being stiffer

I get a pretty loud screeching sound when I shift from 2nd to 3rd, when I'm rodding the car. It sounds like a belt slipping, but it doesn't happen in any other gear shift ... only from 2nd to 3rd, and the screech is pretty obnoxious. Anybody know if this is the throwout?

Slipping of the clutch is a sure fire way that you're clutch is going.
Inability to shift smoothly, clutch pedal pressure, clutch engagement.

Oh but before you replace anything, make sure to simply try adjusting the clutch, AND refilling your transmission fluid. Just to single out clutch problems.

I thought you couldn't make adjustments to hydraulic clutches...

It really sounds like belts are slipping, but it's only when I let out of 2nd before going into 3rd, when I'm accelerating quite fast. Do shot throwout bearings sound like this when they are going (like slipping belts)?

When your car is idling, and you have your foot off the clutch, do you here a constant wewewewew.. uhm. ok. do you hear a constant(but easily noticable with foot on and off clutch - goes away w/foot on clutch) highpitched noise?

I get that screeech if I'm really flossing it, from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd. My clutch has 122k miles on it and I'm worried! I'm thinking of replacing it before it goes.

Someone told me it's bad to sit there with the clutch down and the shifter in 1st, because it wears the release bearing. Anyone know if that's the same as the throwout bearing?

Not really. I only really hear anything out of the ordinary (that loud screech) when I go from 2nd to 3rd, while really getting on the engine hard. One thing I have noticed more of, besides the screech, is that my car seems to rock from front to back while I'm leaving the lot at my apartment in first gear. Could this be a warped flywheel, or something? It's not a violent rocking, but it's not a perfectly smooth acceleration in first, though.

what kind of different fluids are in your transmission you can replace? i read in my chiltons that my 4th gen has no type of seperate fluids listed. it said that the tranny runs on the same oil in the rest of your car and you wont have to do anything to it. and that there was gearbox oil. i dont really trust the chiltons it seems like its not really too in depth. i figure they might have skipped over a few sections and there might be something else i should use. what should be changed and how would i benefit? and how do i do it?

I have that screetching sound also after I put in my ACT clutch. Fist the mechanic who installed it said that it was dust from the clutch that was making it slip(hence the sound) he sprayed it w/brake cleaner through the outside and it fixed the problem till the brake cleaner dried. He said he was baffled and never had a prob like it ever. I called ACT told them everything and their tec rep said that the clutch I selected was "noisy" and was for drag racing only. So I'm stuck with the obnoxious sound also! the flipside...its only noisy when I go through the gears smoothly and civilized, but when I race the car or shift hard/high rpm I only hear the the tires screetching

In the 4g manuals, it suggest you use regular 10w-30 motor oil in your tranny. You COULD use that, but I recommend the Honda Manual Transmission fluid. About $4-5 a quart from your local dealer. You'll need 2 quarts. "Gearbox" oil is just another term for tranny fluid. It's similar to an oil change, but it's a bit harder to fill it up. It should be in your Chiltons manual, if not, do a search on this board, I'm 100% sure you'll find the procedures to changing the fluid.

how often do i have to change that? chiltons says that i wont ever have to since its circulating from the rest of the oil. i had a feeling not to trust it though. my friend told me to try a certain type from castrol from manual trannies saying it helps alot for smoother speed shifting and that it sticks to the gears alot better

Don't listen to the Chilton's. The tranny fluid is completely different from the engine oil. It's up to you if you wanna take your friend's advice... but I'll tell you, there has been 0 complains about the Honda Manual Tranny fluid. I personally love it. I change it every 15k or so because I'm constantly beating the crap out of my car/tranny. And with 133k right now, it shifts perfectly smooth without a problem...
