climate control and tail light problem

For the past year or so my climate control lights (not the indicator light, just the lights that come on when the headlights are on) would occasionally cut off. I would slap the dash and they would come back on. About 2 weeks ago they went off and no amount of slapping would bring them back on. I figured sooner or later i'd get around to pulling the climate control out and doing the fix that has been discussed (resoldering all of the pinouts for the green plug).

About a week after that I happened to notice that my tail lights don't work. Brake lights work fine (same bulb) but my tail lights dont come on with my headlights. Bulb looks fine, so i checked the voltage. I'm not getting the needed 12v in the red/black wire that goes to the tail light.

So now i'm wondering if these two symptoms are related. I have the climate control removed, and i soldered each of the pinouts even though they all looked perfectly ok. Both problems still exist. Is there a fusee i'm missing somewhere? The dash lights work fine with the headlights (speedo, tach, temp, fuel). The turn signals and reverse lights also function fine.

Anybody have any ideas for either or both?

sounds like a ground problem. search for where they may be grounded together. If you have swapped your engine, check your grounds there first.

Nope, no engine swap.

I've been looking over the wiring diagrams for both, but can't seem to find what they have in common. Starting to wonder if they're unrelated.

Sounds like you may have shorted the red/black wire that turns on "parking lights" and controls dash lights, etc. The short may be at the climate control. Easy way to test is to use a multi-meter or continuity tester to check for continuity with ground on the Red/black wire in your trunk. If its grounding out then you have a short.
