Checking timing

I took the little grommet out of the block and pointed the timing gun in there (the timing gun was hooked up correctly), but I couldn't get any reading. I think the marker has worn off. Anyone know of another way to get it or know the stock timing because I really want to get my EMS hooked up.

you do have to take that rubber stopper out of the front of the block to get the timing though, right? I don't want to be a complete idiot here doing the wrong thing...

Yes... setup your Timing Light/Gun for 15° and then aim it in and adjust the light until you see the mark so you know where you're at. Then (if you are OBDI) you can adjust the timing by rotating the distributor.

ok bring this back

i want to check my timing, i have a timing gun and i'm pretty sure i know how to hook it up (but if you want to tell me that would really help )

but my timing gun doesn't have a button/key/etc to change the timing to 15 degrees

there is just a trigger...........how would this work?

you hook up the red lead to the pos. terminal of the battery... black lead to the neg. terminal of the battery.. and you hook the plastic hook to the #1 plug wire...

to adjust timing.. you need to loosen the adjusting bolt on the distributor and move the distributor... and tighten the bolt once you got it to 15 degrees....

and you check your timing by looking through that hole where the flywheel is.. .

to be exact... its the 3 mounting bolts of the distributor and make sure your car is warmed up (cooling fans on)... if you need to retard the timing, turn it torwards the radiator, if you need to advance, the other way obviously hehe.

you basically have to look for the markings on your flywheel. When you shine the timing light into the "window" on the flywheel, you should see a little arrow looking thing that points like this < ... that needs to be pointing to the red marking on the flywheel. When it's pointing to the red marking, that indicates your timing as 15° before top dead center (btdc). and if you look under the hood of the car, youll see that there on a sticker.
